Terry Pratchet - Making Money

The second discworld book centered on the exploits of reluctantly reformed con-man Moist Von Lipwig, as he moves from the Ankh-Morpork Post office to the royal mint. I think that this book definitely gets across the feel of Ankh-Morpork, and its attitudes to money and commerce, as well as its tendancy to accumulate traditions over time. I wish I had had this book when I was doing A-level economics - It would definitely have relieved the boredom.

Now I just have to read it a couple more times to get the jokes I missed the first time.

Quick plug - Waterstones are selling the book at half price (£9.49), and some of their copies (marked with stickers) include Ankh-Morpork banknotes inside the front cover.
