The Box of Delights

Made by the BBC in the 80's, and its a real classic.

6 episodes, 30 min each, originally shown one episode per week, the last one on Christmas eve 1984. Based on the book by John Masefield.

I was 5 at the time, but its really stuck in my memory.

Good things about it:-

Great old school BBC visual effects. Combination of CSO, Video effects (Quantel), hand-drawn animation and live action shot mostly on Outside Broadcast Video. They really work to create an atmosphere of unreality.

Great acting from the villians. Sir Robert Stephens chews up the scenery and spits it out every time he's on camera. He feriously snarls every line of his dialogue to create a truly EEEEvvil performance. Apparently he was drunk throughout most of the filming, and probably thought he was still in Richard III or something.

Patrick Troughton. The Second Doctor. As great as ever.

Scary wolves.

Pagan magic shown to be older and more powerful than Christianity. The Christians are shown to be quaint, but not very bright, and completely oblivious to the Old Magicks going on around them.

Bad things about it:-

Some of the kids are really, really, really annoyingly upper class. One of them even has a habit of saying "splendiferous".

If you can put up with that, you could do a lot worse than pick up a copy of the DVD.

Its a BBC classic.
