Halo2 (XBox)

The first Halo was a reason to own an XBox all by itself, the second continues the trend. The first most noticable difference is that you can now dual wield certain weapons, so fire two at once. It's an interesting difference, but I have to say it caused me to spend a lot of time throwing weapons around and I generally just used a 2 handed weapon and threw grenades. The next most noticable thing is that the AI has improved significantly, with enemies hiding, camping, flocking and flanking much more efficiently. The marines are also a bit more useful and can now drive vehicles, albeit stunningly badly! There's another interesting new development, but I'm not going to give them away 'cos I liked the surprise.

Everything else is pretty much like the original, graphics are better, weapons are tweaked for balance, voice clips are more numerous and sarcastic and the plot is more convoluted (yet equally as ignorable). The checkpoints and loads seem to be a lot better placed and more plentiful, but I've only played it on co-op where you don't notice them so much. The ending is much less frustrating than the timed obstacle course of the first game, but still isn't as great as the rest of the game.

Basically if you liked the first one, you'll like the 2nd. If you like fps, you'll like this. This game is a pretty good excuse to buy an xbox and you can't really give higher praise than that.

The homicidal marine driving AI really needed more work (can't count the # of time I've been run over with a friendly warhog!) Only other quibble is a graphical glitch with the cut scenes' bumpmapping. But these are minor complaints, the game is fantastic - better even than the original, and has some great touches like the ability to attack and hijack enermy vehicles.

Highly recommended.
