Neutronium Alchemist - Peter F. Hamilton

What can I say? The best hard SF author at the moment, grand scope and a huge cast but not overly confusing.

The Vor Game - Lois McMaster Bujold

Grand scale space opera, read her work!

The Honor of the Queen - David Weber

Some of the best space opera/military SF written, internally consistent and describes the politics behind a war as well.

Orion - Ben Bova

Alternate history about a modified human sent back in time. A well detailed historical viewpoint.

Starquake - Robert L. Forward

Story of life on the surface of a neutron star. The physics is dated but immensely detailed.
