Pride of Chanur - C J Cherryh

A space opera told from the ethical viewpoint of an alien freighter captain. Needs reading several times to catch all the subtleties - in particular FLT time dilation effects.

Rats and Gargoyles - Mary Gentle

Highly stylised fantasy novel that draws from medieval occult and myth. Weird but beautifully written.

The Stonor Eagles - William Horwood

Best known for his Duncton epic, this very different novel intertwines the stories of a developing artist and the eagles that inspire him.

Taltos the Assassin - Steven Brust

Dark and very very sarcastic fantasy.

Rendezvous with Rama - Arthur C Clarke

A classic though the sequels suck badly.

Runner Up: The Ship who Sang - Anne McCaffrey

For all her faults as a writer (she has many!), Anne's short stories and novellas are outstanding.
