Lately I have been reading many books in the 'cyber-punk' genre by authors such as Neal Stephenson and William Gibson, and so when ICSF went to see the Arthur C. Clarke awards and Ken McLeod was a nominee (a British author of the very same genre) I knew I had to read some of his books.

\"The Starship Fraction" is set on the isles that make up Britain in a future where the islands are ruled by "the Hanoverians" who right wing and a puppet of the US/UN hegemony. There are many enclaves which were formed in the 'Settlement' - when the "United Republic of Great Britain" collapsed, one of which is Beulah City - a very fundamental Christain town; next door is Norlonto - the only free area left in the south and middle of Britain not subject to Hanoverian rule. The story follows a scientist (Janice) and free-lance mercenary (Moh) both of whom are left-wing (one might say communist ), initially through Norlonto and then north to Scotland. They become involved in the ANR (Army of the New Republic), a resistance movement who are looking to reunite the "United Republic of Great Britain".

The story is based on the proliferation of computers to all walks of life, and revolves around pieces of software written by Mohs father that makes up the backbone of the worlds communications network. This software also has back doors built in leading to the creation of self reproducing AI's.

A superb book, not least because it is set in Britain and gives you a glimpse of what life would be like in the future if "the new world order" falls apart.
