As most people will tell you I like the simpler things in life. I like my food without half a spice cupboard, my courses with nice short words and simple pictures, my films with pretty explosions and witty jokes and my books without 300 pages describing how green the forest was. So I jumped upon a childrens' book about wizards - how many long words could it have?

The answer is not many. The format is fairly unoriginal, child goes off to school (albeit a wizards' school) and has adventures. For anyone who's ever read the Worst Witch books, this is nothing amazingly new. The characters are fairly stereotypical - the friendly groundsman, the boffiny girl who eventually becomes a friend to the hero, the strict teachers... etc.

However I loved it, couldn't put it down, have been forced to go out and spend my hard earned overdraft on the following books. (grumble) I didn't work out 'who did it' until the end (although I'm not known for my problem solving abilities), the characters, despite being a bit cliche, were believable and interesting. The writing style is delightfully straight-forward and unfussy (the forest is green, with brown bits). I recommend this book wholeheartedly. Stop being so snooty and saying "it's a children's book! I'm a grown up!", if you can't enjoy these books, you are beyond all hope of salvation from us and you'll just have to go join Bridge Club. :OP
