This book is the latest in the Miles Vorkosigan series and is based, unlike the previous few books, back on Miles's home planet of Barrayar. The story follows a series of upheavals in the Barrayaran society in the months preceding the emperor's wedding, many of which, unsurprisingly, seem to be following Miles around! Despite these wider problems that Miles as Imperial Auditor has to deal with, Miles is also attempting - slightly ineptly - to court Ekaterin (a Vor Widow introduced in the last book "Komarr") along with what seems like half of Barrayar at times. To throw another spanner into Miles's life, his clone - Mark - has reappeared with a mad biochemist in tow and a large collection of genetically engineered bugs, life is never quiet around Miles Naismith Vorkosigan!

Lois's characterisation is, as always, faultless, and the book sets an extremely fast pace leading to a compulsive page turning conclusion just before the emperor's wedding. This book is an excellent addition to this long running series but is probably not a good introduction to the work, it is probably better to start with either the short story collection "The Borders of Infinity" or to start at the beginning of the series with "Shards of Honor" which tells of Miles's mother's life.
