Neil Gaiman always made it clear that 'The Wake' would be the last Sandman story to be published. He had written stories taking Dream from the 1900s to the present day, ending with the death of Morpheus and the emergence of a new Dream. However, his mind was changed when he saw the Sandman 10th Anniversary poster. Featuring the work of an artist well known in Japan, Yoshitaka Amano, it showed a Morpheus that he hadn't yet written about.

'The Dream Hunters' is set in Japan approximately 1000 years before 'Preludes and Nocturnes', the first Sandman book. Unlike the rest of the series, it is not a graphic novel in comic form. Instead, it is an illustrated story. The artwork is something very special, consisting of beautiful, detailed paintings on every other page. The text itself lives up to Gaiman's usual high standards, and tells the story of a fox, a monk and an evil magician. Readers should keep a box of tissues handy for the ending.

I would recommend this book highly. Those who are already fans of the Sandman will love it. It would also make a good introduction to people new to the Sandman or to Gaiman's work, as it does not require prior knowledge of a plot cycle. The only problem is that at the moment it is only available in hardback, and costs £22.99 - a bit out of most students' price range.

Update: since this review was written, this book has now been released in paperback, costing £10.99
