New Babylon 5 mini-series

"Babylon 5 - The Lost Tales": a collection of individual stories, straight-to-DVD as well as maybe broadcast, for mid-2007.

"What JMS suggested was a bunch of short films-little mini-movies, an anthology show set in the Babylon 5 universe.

They said, "Okay." There’s a network already interested in carrying them but they’re also planned for direct to DVD. This will be "Babylon 5 - The Lost Tales", a lot of small stories that never made it into the series that he's rediscovered notes for. And JMS wants no interference, complete creative support - in writing. They said, "Okay." And JMS wants to direct them. They said, "Okay." The first will be three individual stories about three of the main characters (to be determined).

The plan is to shoot in September, post-production Oct.-Dec. and they'll probably come out the second quarter of 2007."

That sounds pretty nifty - I'll certainly watch them when they're available.

( - another message; he's getting a whole lot of interest for other projects due to the movie just announced ("Changeling"). Which hopefully bodes well for any future B5 stuff :)

various places are saying 20min per episode, but according to jms:

No, it's closer to one-half-hour per story, so figure about 75-90 minutes per DVD, plus additional material adding up to a two-hour DVD. (

Colour me pessimistic, but ... since Crusade wasn't very good, the only good film was the first one, and legend of teh rangers was pretty bad, what makes us think that this will be any good?

Yes, I remember several discussions where we thought JMS's short/standalone stories (particularly their first half-hour) don't turn out as well as his series, where the individual episodes fare a lot better as part of long-term arcs.

The difference with these new ones is that a) they will be focused on existing characters (presumably original B5 cast), so even though they're short they save time on potentially-weaker set up, b) they appear to be very emphatically letting JMS do what he wants, without interference. Crusade would have been much better without the network interference (which killed it, remember - i thought the unproduced crusade scripts which were on bookface showed a lot of promise). And season 3 of B5 was stunningly good - which according to the script book was the only one where they were both left alone by the studio and 'knew' they were going to have the full 5 years to tell the story.

I'm looking forward to seeing them :)
