Starcraft Ghost Toast

Posted by karne (27th Mar 2006, 09:51) - http://xbox.gamespy.com

In a shock annoucement Blizzard say that the heavily delayed Starcraft Ghost is postponed indefinitely.

Anyone else think the big B has got a bit too obsessed with World of Warcraft recently? I seem to remember a time when their primary focus was fun *single player* games...

Well it did look a bit naff but it's still rather annoying. And what's with putting so much effort into the next gen consoles... make Starcraft 2 for pc and let the cash flow inwards.

When will games companies learn that people don't necessarily want amazing new games using the latest hardware and that if they developed expandable games like star/war-craft lower overheads + longer shelf life -> more profit.

Maybe I'm just hopelessly naive.

Blizzard does seem to be going downhill a bit. Hmmmm... now that I think about it, most game companies seem to start out small, have a few good games (if they're lucky) then all the good people leave to start another campany sand it all goes downhill from there.

You may be right, most successful games studios (in respect to game quality) appear to be relatively small teams. Too much management leads to stifled creativity and vision maybe?

So many of the recent big sequels have lacked a certain 'something'. Doom3, halflife2 and Moo3 are good examples.

I'd add Serious Sam 2 to that list.

Blizzard have managed to remain independant (ie not be bought out by EA) but seem to have been overwhelmed by World of Bloody Warcraft. Most of the small companies end up getting bought out and then gradually fading away under the limelight of their owners (eg Bullfrog). I wish larger companies would learn that you can own a smaller studio without overpowering it and stiffling it's creativity. Give 'em more money and help with the marketing/pr (which larger companies are better at generally) but for crying out loud leave them alone to make the games that made them successful in the first place.

*deep calming breath*
