That's a bit harsh. I found the thing originally via the whedonesque board and posted it here. There was nothing to stop other fan boards posting the link too. (There've been a couple of "The force.net just linked to this one too guys, go do battle" type posts ;0)

It's not like a poll like that was ever really going to have a balanced sample group. Or that they were trying to put together definitive answers.

i think what carried it is that there is a lot of Firfly interst at the moment with people watching the forums (especially whedonesque) to check for signs of a sequal. But as with any web activity your respondents are self selecting at best, and activly cheating at worst. Id have (and did) put firefly in my top 3 although not serenity. I think this shows that at this point in time the firefly crowd are somewhat more active and thats gogin to affect any poll.

and to be honest i dont think the individual fans of firefly were attempting to skew the results, just giving an honest opinion and certinaly not in any way wreckers any moer than fans of other shows were. The results were a lot lower than id have exoected so it seems that the only thing this is measuring accuratly is community responsiveness and their penetration into the web. If newscientist wanted a good sample it should probaly have been more widly advertied on cominuity forums and sites. The fact it wasnt left it open for ANY of the fan communities to post on a busy forum.
