I'm inclined to say that this is sloppy journalism rather than a genuine feud. If you'd just read the Pratchett quotes from that article, and not the headline, would you have said "Wow, he sounds really angry"?

Neil Gaiman has expressed similar doubts in his blog - (

Whilst on the one hand I agree with John, and I don't think this is the genuine furore it's being made out to be, I can understand people being fed up with authors writing in the SF/fantasy genre whilst at the same time putting it down.

The worst case I can remember is Margaret Atwood, who tried to claim that her books weren't SF under the specious logic that a book isn't SF without spaceships and lasers, but I'm sure there have been others.

Rowling is being silly, obviously her work is fantasy and it's daft to claim she ever thought otherwise. That's unless she has a really odd definition of fantasy. I should imagine Pratchett is annoyed by the media attention given to what he sees as fluffy, somewhat badly writen bed time stories. Maybe he has a point.

Atwood is in a better position, from what little of her work I've read (personally I can't stand it) it's 'what-if' fiction but not really SF. In that respect, they seem to be closer to the clasic fantasys like Guilliver's Travels.

Ah, looks like the BBC have reconsidered this - that article has been modified with the new headline "Pratchett takes swipe at Rowling". Go-go-gadget revisionist history!
