SCI FI cuts opening Stargate credits to 10 seconds

Posted by Sulkyblue (10th Jul 2005, 10:09) - http://www.gateworld.net

The credits for both SG1 and Atlantis are being cut to just 10 seconds (a la Lost) for the new seasons which start in the US next friday. Apparently it's a cost cutting excercise to make space for an extra 50secs of adverts. Does everyone just fastforward the titles or will anyone miss them?

I do normally watch the intro credits, but won't be a major hardship to do without them. Mind you, I haven't seen "Lost", so I don't know how they handled it - I'm guessing that this means the cast names will all be superimposed on the episode, like guest stars? That's something that I could happily do without, and it's generally seemed to happen in American programs rather than British ones - you're 10 minutes into the episode, and there are still "subtitles" flashing up on the screen.

Thanks for the tip - I'm really impressed by "Lost" so far :)

Yes they're just a few seconds of splash of the series logo with the producer credits (I think), so the cast, guest cast, writers, directors and caterers will get listed at the bottom of the screen for the next 20 minutes of the episode.

One thing this does remind me of is the Buffy episode "The Body". In the commentary, they said that the flashback scene immediately after the intro credits was just a way to stall for time until the extra credits had finished, since they thought those subtitiles would be a distraction from the tone of the episode (which I'm inclined to agree with). So, I wonder whether this will lead to more "padding" like that, or just a shift away from serious episodes.

(www.gateworld.net) - and the credits are going back again. Maybe the shortened credits worked ok when they were immediately after or before the ads (sci-fi put their ad breaks in weird places) but just watching the episode they were really dumb - completely broke you out of the flow of the episode.
