Various Magic

Mark Rosewater talks about the new subtype - arcane. Which doesn't do anything (well directly anyways)? And Soulshift. The preview card's nifty too.

Preview - (

Also, the next selecting: ( - Glorious Anthem vs Shared Triumph. Furnace of Rath won last weeks (yay!)

re: Thief of Hope. This doesn't particularly enthuse me. It's a good card and all (particularly for an uncommon) but it's a Ronseal (does exactly what it says on the tin). It's going to be a staple in this sets equivalent of the arcbound decks, ie resucitating spirit decks. Also I'm not wild about adding a type to sorceries, it seems wrong to me that a spell should be subtyped according to what creature supposedly plays it (although any creature can actually play it) as it's the player not the creature that plays spells. Dunno, seems wrong.

( - today's card just plain scares me. They do seem to be playing around with the rules this set as much as possible, pushing various ideas as far as they can . I know it's 8 mana and all, but I really don't like the power of this card. You can go from most powerful to most dead utterly regardless of your overall game position. *shudder*

it's a combined kill card and silly bugger player - I like it though yeah I'm also scared of it.

Would go beautifully as a game ender in your life burn deck lorna ];=8) Generally worried by any white player that gets that much mana anyways.. at least acceleration is difficult in white.

btw - seems to be some confusion on boards etc - to make it clear this card redistributes the life *totals* not life itself. Hence the life amounts don't change.

I'd tend to agree with Lorna about the Arcane thing. It seems unnecessary when there are a lot of other ways you can categorise instants and sorceries without sticking a label on them, and doesn't fit (in my opinion) with the supposed RP of the game. I'd also question whether they intend to continue Arcane after the Kamigawa set.

Arcane itself will almost certainly be just a Kamigawa thing, but I think that everything will be able to have subtypes now: lands have had them for a while, artifacts got them recently and now spells and enchantments have them too.

Personally I think it's a good idea - it will provide for a whole gamut of new mechanics and interactions.

Well it explains the new Legend rules. You'ld have to be careful with two of these in play not to have them cancel each other out.

Beale - I understand there's quite a few of them.

Todays card - good example of a blue tutor thought I'ld think that the ones that don't have the '4 differant cards' requirement are better.

While it doesn't have the most exciting rules text, I suspect that this will be a very powerful card for all the sharky players around.

That's better than Savannah Lions! Ouch! and really brings the Legends rule to the fore. Nice - and a first grab in draft,if only to deny it to others...I like the artwork too.

eep, they fiddled the Walls rules too?

 Sulkyblue ( 10th Sep 2004, 10:17, Rank: Nazgul )  reply

Hopefully they'll not print any walls without the defend ability. When they keyword an ability does it mean all other past creatures with the ability get keyworded? Just thinking of any future creatures that have steal Keyword X or soemthing.

Great - more white rush decks *shudder*. So is it my imagination or has the website really not previewed a single red or green card?

 dormouse ( 10th Sep 2004, 10:33, Rank: Jedi )  reply

i don't think they usually bother, when it has no significant new effect on the cards (eg Fear, creature types).

But in the article they say that in this case all past Walls are errata-ed to have Defender - otherwise that would really mess things up!

my poor wall deck - unnatural selection first loses the ability to splat creatures by turning them into legends, and now is no longer any use for letting walls attack or turning other creatures into walls :( nor can empress galina be backed up (though she should be useful for the next set anyway). At least rolling stones has been errataed to still work.

It's a shame about the selection - though I'm sure we can find homes elsewhere.

People should note - Clone is now EVIL against legends, and Dual Nature is worse..

More splicing; I'm not sure how powerful they think this splice is going to be: I can see some advantages, but only in specific situations, mainly where counter spells are being used and you have a defence.
