His Dark Materials Film

Posted by Baz (5th Sep 2004, 20:09) - http://www.bridgetothestars.net

It seems that New Line Cinema (A Time Warner company) have licensed Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, to be filmed as a trilogy of three films.

Exactly how they're going to deal with the more controversial religious elements in the books has not been revealed :-)

cool. Hopefully it will be as good a film as that other film-trilogy new-line made recently :-)

(www.imdb.com) - a few more details. It's being directed by Chris Weitz, writer director of About a Boy and producer of... erm.. the American Pie movies. And screenplay by Tom Stoppard of Shakespear in Love, Empire of the Sun and Brazil. It's due for release in 2005.

Interestingly Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) and Sam Mendes (American Beauty) had previously been linked with the project

I'm just wondering how their going to handle the inevitable Fundementalist backlash against the second and third film ...

(I mean, catholics will dislike the first one, but *any* exytreme christian is going to have issue with The Amber Spyglass)

I'm not sure there will be too much of a problem: there has already been a huge fuss over the trilogy and if new line are making a film then they are presumably aware of this and don't care, so I don't see it being much of an issue
