Unreal Engine 3 Screen shoots

Posted by karne (14th May 2004, 14:06) - http://www.unrealtechnology.com

Just appeared and includes some very impressiveimages of what Epic is working on. Btw, this engine is expected to be powering games from the end of 2006 onwards. And I thought Doom3 looked good..

Wow! Those are pretty stunning, but then I guess if it's 2 years away from actually being released then it's hardly that surprising. But still very impressive.

Nice series of images showing how it works too (it's a more advanced version of the Doom3 model):

The actual ingame model (suprisingly low poly): (www.unrealtechnology.com) A high poly 'art' model that is produced at the same time: (www.unrealtechnology.com) The art model is then ray traced, and the data used to build a lighting model (normal map) for the low res game model: (www.unrealtechnology.com)

Can't wait to see this sort of thing for real. Might just see it at ECTS..

But can you fit the required graphics hardware in the small houses of today? Will we require our own home nuclear fusion reactor just to power the cooling fans? :-)

Well... minimum hardware is the Geforce 6800 which has two Molex connectors on the card for direct powering from the PSU. Nvidia also quoted a minium PSU spec of 480W though they appear to be climbing down over that.

Either way I think I'll wait until PCI Express is out and we can drop this horrid AGP all together.

Hmm.. have now actually finally switched off my Lord of the Rings wallpaper in favour of that one. These are pretty damn impressive, definately favour the pretty gothic architecture ones over the bloody ugly monsters though ;0)
