The Arthur C Clarke Award Thing

Posted by Eemeli (13th May 2004, 14:40) -

Ali and I went off to see the Clarke Awards on behalf of ICSF; here's what conspired.

This year's Arthur C Clarke Award was given to Neal Stephenson for Quicksilver, which gets counted as sci-fi/fantasy at least on account of being set in an alternative universe. The whole ceremony was rather unceremonious and brief, lasting all of perhaps 15 minutes. The rest of the time was your basic mingling atmosphere -- with sci-fi fans and authors, mind. All in all, I rather enjoyed it.

I talked with one of the judges (a Science Museum person) and the way he put it, it got so that when they were talking about the other novels on the shortlist, they started to do so with reference to Quicksilver...

From the point of view of ICSF, it all went, ummm, rather well. We've confirmed Jon Courtenay Grimwood as a Picocon Guest of Honour; he's free for most of February & March next year.

It doesn't look like we'll get to host the awards next year; I talked with Paul Kincaid, the main organiser, and they're quite happy with the English Heritage place they've now got. Though if everything does fall apart, they now know that we might be able to find space for them. The general feeling I got was that they might actually prefer "English Heritage" to "Imperial College Union" as hosts, as they may be wanting a bit more name recognition with the general public... but this is pure conjecture.

However, the organisery people like us, and seem to have a huge database of names and addresses that they'd be happy to help us out with. Ali talked with and has the contact details of their database person.

Sounds promising for next year. Shame they don't want to be hosted by us!
