I wonder - is is possible to do a superman film now and not having it come across as silly?

I think it's certainly possible, for me at least, but it will probably vary from person to person. Interesting to note that Josh Hartnett (24) is a year younger than Tom Welling (25), who's playing Clark Kent in "Smallville" at the moment. I think that will be the biggest challenge - trying to avoid comparisons to what's come before, with the various films/TV series (leaving aside radio/comics, which only a minority of people have encountered). I think their best bet would be to emulate the start of "Superman II" - have a brief clipshow during the credits at the start, showing "blah blah, Kryton explodes, rocket comes to Earth, he grows up, becomes Superman", then get on with the real story from there. I'd also like to see the Batman/Superman crossover that they were hinting at a while back - "Batman Forever" referred to Metropolis, and "Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman" referred to Gotham City and Batman.

Apparently "Mutant X" star Victor Webster is also in line for the role.

I haven't actually seen "Mutant X", but I do know that it stars John Shea, who played Lex Luthor in "The New Adventures of Superman", so there's a certain symmetry there :)

(www.scifi.com) - Hartnett has dropped out, new rumours indicate Brendan Fraser, Paul Walker and Matthew Bome. Somehow I feel this story could drag a bit...

(filmforce.ign.com) - and now they're saying David Boreanaz has actually signed.

David Boranaz denied it, said he'd talked to them, but not got anywhere. New rumour of the day is Jerry O'Connel (from Sliders) and Rob Lowe as Lex Luthor - (www.darkhorizons.com)

According to (movieclub.msn.co.uk), Brendan Fraser and Matthew Bomer have declined the role.

And now they've lost the director. David Boreanaz was apparently a strong contender but had to pull out when Angel was renewed for a 5th season (?! no other confirmation of this ANYWHERE!) although he's apparently being considered for the next Batman. Also Steve Martin linked to Perry White. From (www.darkhorizons.com)

Seems odd that they'd say "He can't do Superman because he's busy on Angel, but he can do Batman". Unless they're planning to get a body double to do all the scenes in the costume...

Batman won't be being produced until next summer at least. Superman is supposed to go into production this autumn, ie exactly when they film Angel.

There's an interview at (www.zap2it.com) with John Schneider (who plays Jonathan Kent in "Smallville"), where he says that he advised Tom Welling (who plays Clark Kent) not to reprise his role in the film, and that he's given the same advice to everyone else who's been offered the part. His view is that the film is either a disaster (he refers to "Lost in Space", although I quite liked that film), in which case you've screwed your career, or it's a success, in which case you're typecast.
