So, are all cards now going to be foils? That wasn't quite clear from the article. Although the shiny cards (in current edition) look nice, I wouldn't want to pay twice as much for all my packs...
On the whole though, I like the look of these changes, as I think they make things clearer. Anything that can get rid of the "masses of small print" syndrome is fine by me :)

Making things clearer is good. I really don't like the embossed look though - it makes it look like every other card game out there, and takes away just about everything of the feel of magic cards that I like. It looks way too modern and SF style - not fantasy, and so doesn't match the art or the card mechanics.

I LIKE small print - its complecity is what attracted me to the game in the first place

Well, there's complexity, and there's obscurity. E.g. the difference between saying "mountainwalk", and saying "this creature cannot be blocked if it is attacking a player who controls a mountain". The game mechanics are the same either way, but it's less imposing if you don't have a big block of small print to read.

not sure what your point is, john - the current rule is to say BOTH "mountainwalk" and "this creature cannot be blocked..." because they don't want to force people to read the manual to be able to play the game. Hence the thing about naming 'fear' actually leads to more small print than before...
A completely different policy that they have now is to actively avoid card mechanics that are too complicated - which reduces small print, but means that many of the more interesting or unique cards wouldn't have been printed today (or would have been simplified). I can see why they're doing that but it is also a shame; card mechanics now seem much more modular.

Well, that may not have been the best example (I was trying to think of a simple thing that everyone knows). The quote from that page (re: land subtypes) is "Under this scheme, a Tundra wouldn't need four lines of text, just 'Land – Island Plains' in its type box." This seems like a good idea to me.

While it wouldn't directly affect this card, the reaction I'm thinking of applies to cards like Goblin Kites, where I look at it and think "Urg. Stuff happens." (particularly if I have to squint at it in low light).

about the land types, agreed - that is a good thing. But why then didn't they do the same for artifact creatures, which have the same problem but to an even greater degree? Maybe the image they gave isn't final. I'll be interested to see if they went for "Creature - Human", too.

A tundra is not both an Island and a Plain - it's a unique non basic land that can give either colour. It's not affected by flash fire (destroy all plains) or similar spells. To call it Land- Island Plains implies a) it can be affected by land spells, b) it gives BOTH types of mana when taped not either. I think it's a stupid idea personally..

Some older cards were very badly worded and I like the use of 'fear' and 'mountainwalk' but the rules have occasionally got too simple for them to be fun.
