Five Fathoms

Full five lightyears thy astronaut floats
Of his bones uranium made
Covered in hydrogen isotopes
Nothing of the reaction fades
"Remnant of our destructive past?"
Perhaps our children will one day say
Will all the weapons we now amass
remain unused until peace one day?
One hopes humanity will evolve and change
Free itself of its barbaric chains
of distrust, suspicion, hate and greed
Balance desire against real need

Our speck of blue alone in the ether
Carolling death throes on radio waves.
Like some beautiful planetary diva,
Slowly dying in the Milky Way.
