Esoc was established in October 1997, by a group of Imperial College students who were concerned about the environment in the context of social, cultural, political and economic issues. The society tries to run itself as a co-operative, so we make decisions by discussion and consensus. The committee does not necessarily do all the work of the society and we try to encourage everyone who attends a meeting to leave with something to do, ranging from making a telephone call to inviting a speaker to writing an article for Felix to making banners, so that everyone can feel involved. Meetings are not just about organisation of society business and talking shop, they also provide an opportunity for like-minded people to come together and chat about anything, so a meeting is a social occasion too as we often end up as friends as the year progresses.
We are a very sociable group of people, and we organise talks and campaigns on local and global issues and trips to places of interest. There is lots planned for the coming year and we always value feedback from our members so please do get in touch if you have any ideas for events or campaigns.
Another feature of our society is the development of a campus garden on a piece of land originally acquired in 1998. Work started in the Autumn term of 1999 with the aim of demonstrating several highly efficient and sustainable gardening techniques which maintain biodiversity, as well as growing a range of fruit, veg and herbs for members to take home! For more information about us and current events, check out our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ImperialEnvironmentalSoc/ As well as our instagram page: icl_environmental_society
