Annual General Meeting 2018

ICSS concluded its Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the academic year on 28th February (Wed).

During the meeting, the 35th Executive Committee concluded their term with a summary of our financial report and the events and initiatives organised throughout the past year. The hustings for the Leadership Elections 2018 was also held in conjunction with this meeting.

The 35th Exco would like to thank all our members for your support over the past year! It has been a pleasure serving you and we hope that you will continue to give your utmost support to the 36th Exco!

Major Event 2018: The Infinite Wallace Young

ICSS was proud to stage Major Event 2018: The Infinite Wallace Young on the 24th of February this year at the Imperial College Great Hall.

A tribute to Major Event over the years as ICSS celebrates its 35th anniversary, this year’s production, The Infinite Wallace Young”, was a fourth-wall-breaking comedy that explored the theme of finding yourself and writing your own story. The plot revolved around average Singaporean Wallace Young’s rebellion against a cruel Narrator, who forced him into several different stories set in the Singaporean multiverse. The setting of each story fell into a different point in Singapore’s history and gave the audience members a chance to explore our heritage and see what Singapore was, is and could be.

Major Event is known for its showcase of our members’ talent and it delivered once again this year. This year’s show presented a script, live music, complex dances and breath-taking props and sets that were all crafted by our own members. Our performers and crew members have dedicated their sincere efforts over the past five months into making this show what it is, forging strong friendships along the way. Though our Major Event journey may have ended with our curtain call, it’s heartening to know that the beautiful memories we all made will continue to live on.

A lucky draw was held alongside this year’s Major Event and the lucky winner walked away with a grand prize of 1 x Economy Class Return Ticket from London to Singapore (vice versa) on Singapore Airlines. This prize was proudly sponsored by Singapore Airlines and was presented by Mr Sheldon Hee, Singapore Airlines’ General Manager, UK & Ireland, to the lucky winner.

We would like to thank the Deputy High Commissioner of Singapore to the UK, Ms Rozana Bte Abdul Majid, for making some time in her busy schedule to come down to watch our show, along with our audience who came down to watch and support us. We would also like to express our gratitude to the performers and crew who worked so tirelessly to make this show possible.

We would also like to thank the following sponsors for making this event possible.

We hope you all enjoyed your Major Event 2018 experience and hope to see you next year!

35th Anniversary Celebrations

A Time Capsule was sealed on 7 February 2018 as part of our 35th Anniversary Celebrations that was held in conjunction with our Chinese New Year Dinner.

It is in our hopes that with this Time Capsule, which will be opened in 15 years’ time on our 50th Anniversary, we will be able to capture the little bits and pieces of life in Imperial as a Singaporean in 2018.

Before sealing the Time Capsule, we took a look back at our 35 years of history with this video montage:

The Time Capsule contained 35 representative items of the 35th year of ICSS.

The time capsule was sealed by Benjamin Wong, President of the 35th ICSS Executive Committee, after the final ten items were placed into it.

The final ten items were:
1. Singapore Day 2018 Poster from the Overseas Singaporean Unit (OSU)
2. The Kaya and Toast Times Printout
3. Imperial Success Guide – Academic Calendar 2017-18
4. Retrospect
5. The Ultimate Sotong Guide 2017
6. Script of Major Event 2018: The Infinite Wallace Young
7. Music Score for Curtain Call of Major Event 2018: The Infinite Wallace Young
8. T-shirt and Logo of Major Event 2018: The Infinite Wallace Young
9. T-shirt and Logo of Sojourn 2017: Voyagers
10. Message from ICSS 2018 to ICSS 2033

1. Singapore Day 2018 Poster from the Overseas Singaporean Unit (OSU)

The OSU has been an ardent supporter of ICSS and its activities, providing a very strong and stable source of financial support for many of our events. The inclusion of the Singapore Day 2018 poster not only marks 2018 as the year Singapore Day returned to London (previous Singapore Days in London were in 2009 and 2014), but is also a nod to our years of partnership and support between ICSS and OSU. The upcoming Singapore Day 2018 in London, will be held on 24 March 2018.

We certainly hope that in 15 years’ time our organisations will still share the same strong
and meaningful partnership.

2. The Kaya and Toast Times Printout

The Kaya and Toast Times is a fortnightly newsletter that is emailed to everyone subscribed to our mailing list. To date it has over 1000 subscribers, including alumni and interested students of other nationalities. The newsletter is used to disseminate important information about our events and also information about careers and opportunities from our sponsors.

3. Imperial Success Guide – Academic Calendar 2017-18

The Imperial Success Guide offers students advice and resources to excel at Imperial College London. This large academic calendar of 2017-18 was given out to students during the Freshers’ Fair at the start of the academic year. It is common to see this calendar pasted in the rooms of students.

4. Retrospect

Retrospect is a publication done once every three years by ICSS to chart the progress and events of ICSS and functions in a similar way to a yearbook. This edition was printed in 2015 by the 33rd Executive Committee.

5. The Ultimate Sotong Guide 2017

The brainchild of generations of Singaporeans who have come and gone from Imperial, this is the legendary Sotong Guide with all the information necessary for our freshers to settle into a comfortable and assured life in London. Rumour has it that our guide is also used by other schools because of its quality. Within it you will find the information and procedures unique to our time, which may have perhaps changed since this Time Capsule was sealed.

6. Script of Major Event 2018: The Infinite Wallace Young

Every year, ICSS organises an event that showcases Singapore’s culture to the Imperial Community. In recent years, it has taken the form of an entirely original musical production, with its original dances, songs and script each year.

2018’s Major Event script is a fourth-wall- breaking ironic comedy, in which the protagonist, Wallace, is made to embark on a series of adventures that span Singapore’s history, rallying the help of those he meets along the way to help Singaporeans break free of the Narrator’s tyranny so that they can write and achieve their own stories.

7. Music Score for Curtain Call of Major Event 2018: The Infinite Wallace Young

The 2018 edition of Major Event comprised 6 original songs all written and composed by
Singaporeans in Imperial. This year, the music team consists of 26 talented individuals with
instruments ranging from the cello to the trumpet, and we even have a fellow Singaporean from the neighbouring Royal College of Music who was a part of the production as well.

The score included in this Time Capsule is the Curtain Call, a medley of all of the songs produced this year. Interestingly, the composer, Maurice Ng (Aeronautical Engineering Class of 2019), wrote 35 figures in the score, along with the Birthday Song chord progression, in celebration of our 35th Anniversary.

8. T-shirt and Logo of Major Event 2018: The Infinite Wallace Young

Every year, the Major Event T-shirt is given free-of- charge to all participants and contributors to Major Event. This year’s logo was inspired by the mathematical symbol for infinity, and the shirt also features our special 35th Anniversary logo at the front of the shirt.

9. T-shirt and Logo of Sojourn 2017: Voyagers
Sojourn, which means a temporary stay, is our annual freshman orientation camp held in August every year. This orientation camp provides an opportunity for the freshers to get to know their peers and seniors before embarking on their overseas education journey.
The Sojourn 2017 shirt features our logo and theme for the year: Voyagers. It symbolised the start of a new journey that freshers will embark on as they head to London. Sojourn 2017 was held as a 3D2N camp at Aloha Changi and featured a bright sunny day of beach games at Sentosa and an amazing race that took us to all corners of Singapore. As part of tradition, the Sojourn shirt comes in 2 colours, with the seniors in black and the freshers in white.

10: Message from ICSS 2018 to ICSS 2033
It is in our hopes that with this Time Capsule, we will be able to capture the little bits and pieces of life in Imperial as a Singaporean in 2018. Perhaps through this initiative we will all be able to gain insight as to what has remained the same about our lives even though we are 15 years apart, and more importantly, what significant changes have occurred in the years between us.

Chinese New Year Dinner 2018

35th Anniversary Group Photo

Our annual Chinese New Year Dinner was held in conjunction with our 35th Anniversary Celebrations on the 7th Feb 2018. 120 members gathered at Dragon Castle Restaurant for a night of festivities and we hope all of you enjoyed yourselves!

We started the event off with Lou Hei, also known as Prosperity Toss, with loud shouts of ‘huat ah’ to usher in a prosperous New Year.

The sumptuous 10-course dinner certainly got us really excited, and brought us a step closer to home with tastes of Singaporean Chinese cuisine.

And of course, how can we celebrate Chinese New Year without karaoke! Through entertaining rounds of ‘Don’t Forget The Lyrics’ 不要忘记歌词喔, we discovered various ‘talents’ within ICSS.

We were also graced with the appearance of our very own Feng Shui “Master”, Wong Shifu to deliver an comedic presentation of the Chinese Zodiac fortune predictions.

Once again, we would like to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous Chinese New Year! 祝大家狗年吉祥, 旺狗贺岁, 狗年行大运!
