Wind Band

Category: Arts & Entertainment
Imperial College Wind Band is a welcoming and friendly group of woodwind, brass and percussion players, rehearsing and performing a range of modern and classical music each term. No audition is required to join and we aim to provide a challenge to all players over each term through a variety of pieces.

Performing in termly concerts, supplemented by external social and musical events and an annual international summer tour, we aim to provide an enjoyable experience whilst maintaining excellent musical standards.
Activities in recent years have included rehearsal weekends to Oxford, tours to Prague, Munich and Ljubljana and a performance in the RCM's Britten Theatre. We have performed in venues ranging from village halls to the famous beer hall Hofbräuhaus to a rugby stadium in front of over a thousand spectators.

Rehearsals for Wind Band are on Tuesdays from 18:00 to 20:15 in the Great Hall, with a break for tea and cake mid-rehearsal, followed by a weekly trip to a campus bar. This year we’re introducing Flute Choir: a sub-group rehearsing from 16:45 to 18:00 every Tuesday in the Blyth Centre. Conducted by Wind Band’s music director Alan Shellard, we have a few performances each year in Wind Band concerts and busking sessions. This group is open to all flautists, not just those who play in Wind Band – if you like playing with other flutes, or want to try one of the college’s alto flutes, then Flute Choir is for you!
