Can I be a part of the society?

Everyone is welcome to attend and perform at any of our events, and to be a part of our community. However, if you wish to use the practice room or attend masterclasses, you must be a member of the society. Anyone who holds membership of the Union can join at the cost of £5, which includes £6 free practice room credit! You can join the society here.

How do I book the room?

You must first be a member of the society to book the room. Once you are a member, you will receive an email with account information for the Jazz and Rock website. You can then purchase credit from the Union website. Membership and credit can be purchased here. You can buy room credit in multiples of £5. The
credit will be added to your J&R account, and you can select a room slot here. Please note that each member is only allowed to have 4 slots at any time. If you want lots of slots, you can book the soonest available ones, and once they are used, book some more. If you want specific slots, you can book them as soon as they become available. This helps ensure a balance between the two kinds of user. If your band needs more slots, you could get more band members to buy membership. However, please do not get people that will not be with you to book the room for you.

How much does it cost to book the room?

The cost of each room can be found on the bookings page. At the time of writing (June 2017) each hour-long slot in the East room costs 100 credits (£1.00) and each hour-long slot in the West room costs 300 credits (£3.00).

How can I subscribe to the mailing list?

You can subscribe to our main mailing list here.

Can I obtain a replacement booking slip if I delete my confirmation email?

Yes: a list of your upcoming bookings is given on your account page, along with links to booking slips for each.

Can I hire equipment from the society?

We currently hire out equipment for events. If you would like to make a hire request, please email us here. Requests for equipment should be made at least two weeks in advance.

Do you offer lessons?

As a society, we do not offer lessons. However, feel free to post to the mailing list or Facebook asking if someone would be willing to teach you. Also, the ICU Guitar Society often provide guitar lessons.

Where is the West Practice Room and how do I get the keys?

The practice room is located in the West Basement of Beit Quad. You can find it by entering the double doors on the left side of the quad as you enter from Prince Consort Road. Once inside, head down the stairs and turn right. The practice room is through the last set of doors on the left. To obtain the key card, you will need to present your swipe card and booking slip at the Beit Security Lodge (under the arch on the right as you enter from Prince Consort Road). The practice room is wheelchair accessible via another route, but extra security access will need to be added to your ID card, so please contact us at

Where is the East Practice Room and how do I get the keys?

The East practice room is currently closed indefinitely. The practice room is located at the north east of Beit Quad. When you enter the quad from Prince Consort Road continue walking until you get to the union's front entrance. Instead of entering, turn right and continue walking until you get to the union's east entrance. Once inside, go through the doors on your right and take the stairs up two floors. The practice room is on the left. To obtain the key card, you will need to present your swipe card and booking slip at the Beit Security Lodge (under the arch on the right as you enter from Prince Consort Road). This practice room is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.

Why can't I login?

An account on our site is only required by users wishing to book the practice room. Consequently, you should receive your account details after making your first credit purchase. This can take a while if the booking system is broken (there will be a warning on the website if this is the case).

Why has the credit I've purchased not been added to my account?

The system can take up to 15 minutes to update after a purchase, so don't leave buying room credit to the last minute. If it has been more than 30 minutes since you purchased the credit it is probably worthwhile emailing us as there is likely a problem somewhere. If we know that the booking system is offline or broken there will be a notice on the home page about it.

Is J&R on Facebook?

Yes! We have two Facebook groups: one for being social, and one for announcing events.

When do you meet?

The society does not maintain a regular diary of events, but we try to organise three to four live events a term. These typically take place fortnightly on Tuesdays or Thursdays, though this is subject to the availability of the relevant venues. We will announce these events and other opportunities to perform on our mailing list, events Facebook page, and Twitter account.

What equipment does the practice room contain?

Details for each room can be found on the bookings page.

What do all the colours on the booking calendar mean?

Each colour refers to a slot's availability:

  • Red slots are unavailable because they are in the past, too far in the future, or because somebody else has booked them.
  • Green slots are those which you've already booked.
  • Black slots are those which have been made unbookable. This may be due to an event that is being run, or scheduled maintenance (repairs, equipment installation, cleaning, etc.).
  • Blue slots are available for booking.

As well as running the practice room and our live events, Jazz & Rock has a large stock of music equipment that is available for hire, including the following:

  • Drum kits (including breakables)
  • Guitars, amplifiers, cabinets, and effects units
  • Bass guitars, amplifiers, and cabinets
  • Keyboards
  • Microphones, mixing desks, power amps, and speakers
  • Monitors and Wireless IEM systems
  • Cables and other accessories

In addition we liaise with other societies, most often DramSoc, to provide a wider range of sound and lighting equipment than we as a society own.

Most of our hires are "dry" (without crew), but we can do "wet" hires (with crew) as well.
