We've moved!

Imperial College Design Collective

Over the past couple months, the IC Design Collective and DesSoc (Design Engineering Society) have been merging societies to better serve the students of Imperial and members of the Dyson School of Design Engineering. As of 1st August, the two societies have officially merged under the name 'Imperial Design Engineering Society' or 'DesSoc'.

Membership will continue as normal (anyone can become a member, and Dyson School students automatically become members), and you can find our Imperial Union page for membership here.

For more information or questions, contact us at dessoc@ic.ac.uk

Here are a number of past events run by the Design Collective. Imperial DesSoc will be runnin similar events for all members at Imperial in the years to come. For up-to-date information, you are strongly advised to check the Facebook page.

If you would like to talk to us about sponsoring an event, or have any suggestions please get in touch with us.

Trip: The Design Museum

ICDC are EXCITED to host a trip to The Design Museum with discounted tickets for members! There are 3 great exhibitions going on: The Cycle Revolution, Designers in Residence Series and Designer of the Year 2015. The material being showcased is world class, and not to be missed.

Workshop: DIY MIDI Controller

After demoing with ICAH and Artsfest, here it is - the DIY MIDI Controller workshop ! Learn how to build your own 4x4 USB MIDI pad controller. These Arduino-controlled pads allow you to control all kinds of things in music software (think Logic, Ableton or GarageBand) like playing virtual drumkits, or instruments, or triggering loops to play during a performance. The workshop will give you all the parts to make your own and we'll assemble them together.

Trip: Eames at the Barbican

Next Thursday, 28th Jan, come and visit the Barbican to see "The World of Charles and Ray Eames" exhibition. We'll be meeting in the main entrance foyer (by the Business School) of Imperial to travel there together.

Talk: Foster + Partners

Last year we invited Foster + Partners and received great insight into leadership of multi-disciplinary engineering/design teams, the establishment of the Creative Engineering Group at Foster + Partners as well as Landmark projects and the Integrated design process. This year, we present the new. An exciting exploration into the possibilities of 3D printing to construct lunar and new planetary habitations. Our solar system a blank canvas, what will be the Martian vernacular ?

Talk: Buro Happold

This Tuesday, ICDC have Franck Robert from Buro Happold giving a talk on designing for disaster. Franck is now based in London but worked for several years in Africa designing refugee camps to aid those in emergency zones. There are an estimated 60 million refugees worldwide and pragmatic design solutions have to be employed to both sustain and help alleviate the displaced.

Talk: Jaguar

ICDC are proud to present Sam Lucas, from the Research Design Team at Jaguar Land Rover, and his talk on Automotive Design. As well as exploring the Jaguar Land Rover Design approach, Sam will also be giving us some insight into his own impressive portfolio of Freelance Design work. Sam was also Creative Director at aArtvark, and was selected as part of Wallpaper Magazine's highly regarded shortlist of Top Transport Design Graduates for 2015.

James Dyson Foundation Workshop

The James Dyson Foundation return to Imperial to run a second exclusive workshop with ICDC! This is a team workshop and prizes will be given out to the best ideas. Find out more on the Facebook event page.

Introduction to Arduino Workshop

It's our annual Arduino workshop and this year we've got Arduino master Avi Braun back in for 2 sessions to run you through the basics of using an Arduino. If you've always fancied playing around with some electronics but never know how or where to start, this is the perfect platform for you !

Talk: Scott Barwick

For our first talk of the year, Scott Barwick, designer of the London 2012 Olympic Torch, will be giving a presentation to us about informed creativity and his design process.

Sketch-a-Bike Social

Create an outlandish new design for a bike - it doesn't have to be mechanically sound, it just has to push the boundaries of your imagination. In groups, you will be given a mystery object which should be incorporated into your design in some way. It could be a paper clip, it could be a banana...

Design & Build Workshop

We're kicking off the year with a design & build challenge workshop! The challenge is to make a fully working prosthetic arm using easily available materials. This workshop is FREE and we welcome students from all departments. Afterwards we will be having our first social in Eastside Bar for 2 for 1 pizzas and drinks!

Freshers Fair Raffle

Come visit us! We're next to the union doors in Beit Quad. Have a long chat about Dieter Rams' 10 principles for good design. Or don't.
And for one week only, buy our £3 membership to enter our raffle to win a Wacom Intuos Draw graphics tablet !!

2014-15 was a great year for ICDC and to end it on a high we went on our first ever tour to Copenhagen! The capital of simple, practical, and elegant Nordic design, Copenhagen has a lot to offer for anyone interested in design.
We explored the city by day and by night, by land and by sea, by bicycle and by me-mover.
What we discovered?

The committee for Imperial DesSoc can be found on our Imperial Union page. To run for a position on the committee, please contact us! Responsibilities include organising talks and workshops, maintaining the website and designing graphics and posters, as well as securing funding through sponsorship.

We have Student & Staff members in all College departments.

All current College members are eligible for membership. Associate members of the Imperial College Union are also welcome. Whilst membership is not compulsory to attend some events, it is definitely encouraged. This ensures that the society can continue to inspire its members by organising fascinating talks and workshops.

Ultimately, ICDC is doing everything to greatly reduce or remove the cost of membership by obtaining funding from companies and other sources. If you would like to help us meet our goal, please contact us.
