Imperial Judo throws their weight once again

Imperial success at London Universities Open 2018

Another year at the London Universities senior open. This time we were at the University of East London, bright and early for an 8am start. By the end of the day, we accrued 3 gold, 6 silver, 5 bronze medals and came 3rd overall out of 30+ teams! One notable performance was from Ed Fry (U73KG), who achieved Silver in the youth division, and later on went to win gold in the seniors by a drop seoi nage. The level of judo displayed by everyone was fantastic, especially for our first-time competitors.

Imperial Judo rake in the medals once again

E-mail Print PDF

Considering the 6am start, Imperial Judo were in high spirits as they trekked to the edges of civilisation in the wilderness of Uxbridge for this year’s London Senior Universities Judo Open, the biggest competition of the year so far. We hurried down the steps to Brunel yesterday to meet a very nervous coach who informed us we had 4 minutes to get weighed-in, the guys and girls hurried onto the scales to see if the morning ablutions had shaved off half a kilo.

Thrust onto the mat in front of a sizeable crowd (sadly missing some cheerleaders), Imperial displayed some great technique and caused real problems for the competition starting with the best Judo of the day from James Ko (U66kg) who solidly beat all 5 of his opponents and claimed gold without seeming to break a sweat?! Nikola (U90kg), on the other hand, decided throws weren’t his style and promptly threw the rules of judo out of the window. Instead of the tradition turn in and throw Nik pulled his opponent to the ground and forced them into an armlock; Not exactly classy but a bronze medal is a bronze medal.

In between the two were an impressive collection of two-handed hips throws, drop throws and foot sweeps and a case of a particular person losing a match through falling over their own feet. Imperial dominated both men’s and women’s with Alice (U57kg) winning gold even though it was her first competition.

The black belts faced some incredibly tough opposition against people with various things written on their back, worrying things like GBR and WALES. Karl (U81kg) was unlucky losing both his fights to two of the best in the competition but Matt and Ed fought some heroic battles both losing only to the eventual winner and had to settle for bronze and silver. Marie (U63kg) fought hard but unfortunately lost in the final and took home the silver.

So when the final medals were dished out Imperial came home with an impressive 2 gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze medals (for Jake, Stefano, Bronwyn, Joe and Nik) and second in the competition overall. A great performance all round with some huge throws from everyone, not bad for a day’s work as everyone looks forward to BUCS.

And the award for ACC Sportsman of the Year goes to...

E-mail Print PDF
Rahul Bose (2nd Dan). Rahul was presented the prestigious award at tonight's ACC (Athletics Club Committee) dinner, which also saw club captain Wilhelm Kleiminger receiving Full Colours for his service. Rahul has been our most successful judoka to date and a reliable source of medals ever since he joined us in 2002. Rahul is leaving Imperial this year with a PhD in Physics and a silver medal in the under 73kg category at BUCS. His professional coaching has greatly benefited us beginners and dan grades alike. Many an ippon is owed to Rahul's attention to detail. On behalf of the club and the committee, we would like to congratulate Rahul on his achievements and wish him all the very best for his future and many more ippons to come! Edouard/Wilhelm

Huge Success for Imperial Judo at BUCS Championships

E-mail Print PDF
The BUCS championships (formerly known as BUSA) were once again held in Sheffield this year. Having starved for a couple of days to make the weight, our team arrived for weigh-in on Friday evening. Thanks to our careful dieting, everyone successfully weighed in at their respective categories. This is Jakob Gath (-66kg Kyu grades), Wilhelm Kleiminger (-66kg Dan grades), Edouard Desclaux (-73kg Dan grades), Rahul Bose (-73 Dan grades), Eugene Siew (-100kg Dan grades) and Antoine Barge (-100kg Dan grades). After the weigh-in, we joined our friends from the University of London Judo Club for dinner. We had an early night to make sure we were fit for the individual contests due to start at 9 am the next morning.
