Two Medals for Imperial at BUSA Championships

Hannah Bryars (Gold – Foil) and Alessandro Costamagna (Bronze – Epee) take home medals…2007 Individual Championships Report

The 2007 BUSA Fencing Individual Championships was a record breaking event that saw 636 student fencers compete over three days at the University of Nottingham.

The national rankings were upset in the Men’s Epee when Robert Jennings of London beat Thomas Bennett, ranked third in the country, of Royal Holloway. Bennett came in second, with Alessandro Costamagna (Imperial) and Andrew Fenwick (Ulster) drawing for third place.

Birmingham dominated the Women’s Epee with team mates Helen Holloway and Eryn Spinlove taking the top medals respectively. Katherine Gracey of St Andrews and Naomi Taylor of Bristol claimed the bronze.

Tristan Rowcliffe (Northumbria) took gold in the Men’s Foil beating Tom Potterton (Birmingham) who took second place. Andy Caldwell (Oxford) and James Loggie (St Andrews) finished in joint third place.  Rowcliffe was declared Men’s Champion at Arms.

In the Women’s Foil London dominated proceedings with Hannah Bryars (Imperial) winning goldand her Welsh counterpart Lydia Johnson (Swansea) taking silver. Tegan Hill (Loughborough) and Morwenna Perrott (Cardiff) shared bronze.

Francesco Egro (Bristol) won the Men’s Sabre with Chris Markall (Cardiff) coming in second. Bronze was shared by Jacob Colligan (Nottingham) and Kit Rumney (Bath).

Newcastle dominated the Women’s Sabre with Christie Waddington and team mate Robynne Stenner finishing first and second. Third place was shared by Elisabeth Gernerd (Edinburgh) and Melissa Overbury (Kent).  Waddington was also named Women’s Champion at Arms.

BUSA would like to thank Leon Paul who provided the equipment and prizes for the weekend. The winners of each discipline received Leon Paul holdalls and £25 vouchers, second place £15, and third place £10.
