Clubs and Societies

Introduction

Silwood Park Student Union has a club or society to cater for almost any activity imaginable. These clubs are run by silwoodians for silwoodians so if you don't get involved nothing happens! Listed below are just some of the activities that go on in Silwood.

Badminton

We play at Lightwater Leisure Centre on a Thursday evening, from 6 until 7pm. We use the Silwood minibus, leaving at around 5.30pm. Cost is £2.50 per week (or £10 for 5 weeks) for students, £3
per week (or £12 for 5 weeks) for staff. Anybody welcome, rackets
and shuttles are provided. If you would like more information about the club, or badminton in the area generally, please contact Mike Perring.

Football

For anyone who fancies a kick about the football club plays once a week (Mondays) on the astroturf pitch at Bracknell. You will even be chauffer driven there in the minibus from Silwood, so no excuses. This costs either £3 per week or a bargain £20 a term. We can also play on the rabbit hole ridden pitch at Silwood if people are really keen. There should be enough demand to play the occasional competitive game and perhaps to enter a 5 or 7 a-side league. Whatever your ability please come and join us.

Gardening

Grow your own weight in root vegetables. Silwood is big enough to have its own allotments, in front of William Penney Hall, organic and deer proof. The club has a good selection of gardening tools too. If you fancy an allotment contact Sandy Whitehead.

Gym

The Impetus gym can be found behind the reactor centre and is available for everyone at Silwood to join. It is supervised on Tuesdays 12-5 pm and Thursday lunch times 12-2 pm. If you wish to arrange to join the gym or book an induction please call in at those times or email Clare and who will be happy to advise. The gym is fully equipped with up-to-date machines and a good selection of weights, if you feel you need a little more encouragement to get into shape however personal trainers can also be booked for a small fee. The gym operates on a pin code system (which is regularly changed) so you can come and go as you please once you have paid membership.

Photography

Silwood Park Union has a darkroom concealed in the basement of the Manor House. We have both black and white and colour enlargers and all the rest of the equipment necessary for developing and printing your own photos. The room is kept stocked with chemicals and paper -- these have been priced so you pay for what you use at cost. The key is kept in Mary Flowers Hall and so access is 24 hours!

Squash

The squash court is located next to the bar/refectory. Tokens are needed to work the lights and these can be bought from the Residences office (open 11.30am -- 1pm) for 75p each and lasts for 45 minutes. Games should be booked beforehand on the list in the court. A squash ladder operates at Silwood Park on a very informal and friendly basis. Players challenge players above them in the ladder and if the challenger wins, then they move up the ladder taking the place of the loser. There is no membership fee. To join the ladder contact Arnold Roberts.

Swimming

We are a purely recreational group who go swimming on Wednesday evenings, leaving 6.30pm by the minibus and returning by 8.30pm. The leisure centre in Windsor has a fitness pool, big warm pool, sauna and jacuzzis, and is just the thing to set you up for the weekend. Minibus travel is roughly 50p to £1 depending on turnout. Admission to the pool costs £3 if you have a Local Residents Card (obtained at the pool, take a proof of your Silwood address).

Tennis

If you want to play tennis here at Silwood there is a court next to the Manor house which is open every day and free for students to use. During the summer it can get quite popular so it is best to book or expect to get kicked off the court if someone else has booked it already. The booking book can be found at the bottom of the conservatory. If you require tennis rackets or balls contact Clare and they can be provided as long as they are returned ASAP and are well looked after (this also applies to squash rackets).

Yoga

This takes place on Thursdays at 6.00pm in the main hall of the manor house. It runs for about 1 and a half hours and costs £4 per session for students (£6 for non-students). A nice lady called Kate is in charge. Kate's yoga follows the principles of the Ashtanga Vinyasa system, encouraging breath and movement in a dynamic flow, while introducing others forms of yoga to expand knowledge and technique. Suitable clothing is loose fitting, flexible clothes (bare feet). You'll need a yoga mat (these are available for loan or purchased from the teacher) and a warm blanket. More details are avalable from Clare Demazancourt or Sandy Whitehead.
