2004 - 2005
The year started, as always, with Femtocon and videos in the library at lunchtime. Perhaps as a conservation of events following the proliferation early last year, there were no regular evening showings of anything this year. But Kath started up a brand-new event: the 'Book of the Month' meeting (well the meetings were spaced out by more than a month, but no-one could think of a less-corny name). And the indefatigable Magic evenings continued. We went to see Donnie Darko, The Incredibles, Hitchhiker's, Revenge of the Sith (which was a great improvement), Batman Begins, War of the Worlds, Fantastic Four, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Island. Picocon 22's guests were Gwyneth Jones, Jon Courtenay Grimwood, and Brian Stableford. This year, for the first time Picocon was without a film, as the Concert Hall was unavoidably booked. Though attendance at the film has been dropping in recent years (perhaps due to everyone building their DVD collections and <cough> bittorrent etc), so this may be it for the film... We were strangely short of volunteers for committee this year, electing Ben as reluctant editor at the last minute and we never did find a Publicity Officer (Michelle filled in with posters occasionally). Fortunately numbers were up for next year.
