Lots more changes to look and feel - most pages appart from the polls and main bio page are now done. I've moved the 'current poll' box off the front page - there really isn't space for it. -k

I'm running around moving things about (often by only 2 pixels..) and otherwise being arty. Please comment on anything that looks out of place or where the interface isn't obvious or seems broken. The main bio 'view' page isn't done yet - that's going to need a fair bit of work. k

SF/Fantasy news board pretty much finished, i think - any bugs let me know. Only thing we might add is a 'bumping' system to allow you to see the most recently active articles.
Hopefully the links database sections are now all done. Feel free to edit your list of favourite links so we can compile an icsf top link type thingy. There are still some links to be done between various sections, I'll sort them out after lunch.
You've now got a Reading Log as well as a reading list (see your bio page) Due to requests, they've been made visible to others - but we'll eventually make the visibility choosable by you.

The requests system now allows you to keep track of the requests you're searching for.
Also you now have a Reading List (to keep track of Stuff-To-Read) at the bottom of your bio page, which is integrated into the ICSF Database - which is now on the same db as the rest, converted from postgres to mysql (a terribly difficult task - hmm.).
You now have a Log In button on the side - note that any main pages already loaded will still need to be refreshed, easily done on any pages which care by pressing the Log In links within those pages ;).

There is the whole bio/user system of course :) If you have a bio on the old site, and even if you don't, please REGISTER so i don't have to make up a username and password for you.
The bio index pages are now automagically generated. Poor old norfolk is having to stand in for lots of committee though (prod) ;)
The Events list is also database-ized. This should hopefully result in a list which is a) updated b) pruned so we don't see events which happened 3 weeks ago... If you think you'll want to be adding/editing events at any point, tell me and i'll add you to the access list.
If you want to log out, shut down windows showing the icsf site in your browser.

Added a new TV guide (for "Charmed"), and added significant new content to the Trek novels page. Also overhauled existing pages in that section. In particular, made sure that pages validated as XHTML, and fixed broken links to old library database search tool, so that they use the new search tool instead.

Updated email addresses across the site for chair@icsf.co.uk and the like. A peculiarity for the next month is that these new addresses forward to next year's committee, so I haven't updated the main Committee page yet, but most other relevant places should be done.

The job descriptions are now up in the library, filing cabinet. Also new bios added for Tai and Alex Crosse and moved some of the members/alumni around. Events list updated and taken down much of the Picocon 19 labels. Was going to update this years history page as well, but lost enthusiasm. Is anyone else filling stuff in on this page or is it just me?
Second update of the day - bios for Alan and Alia, also a new image on the alumni page and a photo of Shuri for the members page. How long it stays depends on how long I can avoid the cub's claws.

19/12/01 - Union server and cgi
If you're reading this, you'll have noticed that the ICU server has been down for the last few weeks - and hence the cgi bits (database search, bio submissions) haven't been working. The estimate for return-of-union-server is now "probably january" (rather than "in a few days"), so i've shifted the cgi to another server - and they're back up. updated the online database too, while i was at it ;) webcam may or may not be re-enabled before the ICU server returns, depending on stuff...

Recipies for Tom Yum soup and chocolate/coffee tiramisu are up in the Social section. Not something i'd have thought i'd be writing in a "what's new" for a science fiction club page, but i guess it's an indication of a healthy society.. or something ;)

The picocon pages have been re-ordered slightly. Picocon 18 (2001) has been moved to the history section in library. Picocon 19 (2002) now has shiny new pages in social. All the frames work and everything (fingers crossed), I even updated the sitemap!

Lots of updates to random pages in preparation for the new year
The committee page now has this years committee on it, with some of us being demoted to mere members (sniff). Updated the new committee's bio pages with the new info as well and changed the javascript dropdown box to match. Re-did the events table so it looks like we're actually doing some stuff. I've also added in a new page ready for this year's history and finished off last years, although I still want to add some more pickies which I don't have access to at home. There's also some updates to some of the guides in the reference section, nothing exciting - I've just added in the latest information and removed any of the links that have died. I've really gotta get out more....

General updates that were necessary now that we've moved into the new library!
Lots of photos on the New Library pages (linked to from Social, also from Library History pt 5). The library's pretty much tidied now, we just need chairs and more beanbags. Also photos on Finding the Library page.

There's the minutes of the latest meeting in the filing cabinet in the library section. In the social section we also have a whole section dedicated to the new library where planned designs, moving plans and general mutterings will be placed.

25/05/01 - Nearly finished fanzines, wahey!
Got round to typing up the last 2 pages of WHJC (1985's fanzine), so now there's just one more to do :) That we have, that is. There's an awful lot of stuff - back to 1982 - so if you're caught with some time to kill with a web connection, consider having a look... I've been semi-randomly assigning more pictures on the side frames too ;)

Dave Clement's bio has been added in anticipation of his return next year and I've updated the javascript drop down boxes too (yup, all by myself). There's a new page for fanzine submissions (see the menu in the social section). I've also added an Angel Introduction and links page. Please let me know if you have any other links you'd like to add to any of the pages, or stuff for a new page.

We've taken a bit of a break from the website following the rush to get it done for the competition. However I had a couple of bios submitted so thought I'd better drag myself away from my revision to upoad them. So wander to the social section for bios from Matt Johnson and Dan Smith. There's also a couple of new links scattered around. Mostly in the "cool links" section.
24/03/01 - Dinner, Bios and Links
There's a page up for the end of term dinner, it's linked to from the social menu. It's got a couple of pictures on it and some waffle. Also added a funky blue plaque for the icsf flat, added a list of incoming committee to the bottom of the committee page and added a few cross links to bios. All in the social section. I've also added a link or two to the cool links page.
23/03/01 - cgi back up
All the perl scripts have now been transferred from the temporary Force9 server to the Union server. They still all work the same as before ;) The online database is now much easier to update (no longer have to connect through F9 to upload), so it will be updated more regularly then it has been in the last few months.
23/03/01 - cgi temporarily down
Teething problems getting the perl scripts (for library search and feedback forms) to work on the Union server.
The pages are still set to access the scripts on the test server, hosted by Force9, but unfortunately all of their websites, including their cgi server, seem to be down at the moment. As soon as they get them up, the scripts start working again ;) Sorry for inconvenience..
Update: Force9 is now back up and the cgi seems to work ok. We'll get the scripts shifted to the union server as soon as we can get in contect with the Union web editor and track down the problem!

17/03/01 - XHTML 1.0/CSS Validation
This website uses carefully written XHTML 1.0 (the most up-to-date version of 'HTML') combined with CSS (cascading stylesheets). The intention was to make the source code as 'clean' and future proof as possible and we believe we have succeeded in that. The W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) is the authority on web languages and their validators have been used to check this site. There are unavoidable bugs with Internet Explorer 5's XHTML support which mean certain pages (particularly framesets) can't be fully validated, also the CSS we use has some IE specific code (the coloured scroll bars) which other browsers will ignore. The history section has not been validated (since they are the work of a particular member) but all other pages are fully XHTML 1.0/CSS compliant.

Thanks to Jakob and Peter, The Edge of Tomorrow 2 (1992 fanzine) is now done. Only Edge of Tomorrow 1 and the end of WHJC to go...
Validated the fanzines and Wyrmtongue - all passed apart from a few pages where one stylistic effect (proper black table borders rather than the nasty grey indents) is used, and aesthetics won over correctness ;) It won't break anything...
15/03/01 - More resources updates
It is apparently the 15th, just very early! I've just finished going through all the resources pages putting links to the database searches anywhere that's relevent, so you click a link and it puts the database search results in a window. There's also a couple more cool links and I'm sure I did something else, but can't for the life of me remember what. A couple of days ago I uploaded Stuart's bio, sorry, forgot to mention it.

It needs a text rehash (the current lot doesn't have the right feel) and the images has minor issues in mozilla and Opera (growl). Don't know if we can solve these. Opera now works beautifully, Mozilla still giving grief.

Getting there, site is now ready for checking - some areas don't work (mainly the photo and poster archive). Please mail the committee-list with comments/winging etc. Particularly interested in JavaScript and CSS errors. I'd also like to know what browsers people use (particularly unusual ones) and any problems you have. Thsnks!
