Frequently asked questions

Here are some of the questions we get asked the most. We'll add to this list as time progresses.

If you have a question that is not answered here and you can't find out from the rest of the site, contact us and we'll do our best to reply with the information you need.

The club

How can I join ICU Snooker?
How do I receive my membership card?

All the details are on our How to join page.

I've lost my membership card, can I get a new one?

Contact us and we can arrange to meet up and make you a replacement card, or ask a committee member if you visit the snooker rooms. Remember to provide us with a passport-sized photograph just like when you joined the club, either by email or in person.

However, please note that anyone found to have given their card to someone else may be banned from using the snooker rooms and taking part in our activities.

How can I be on one of the snooker teams?

There are many ways in which players can get noticed:

  • Attend one of our team trials: there will be a few spread across the year, including one at the start of the season, in order to measure the development of the participants.
  • Enter our tournaments: new students have a chance to shine in the Freshers' Tournament and everyone can play in the other competitions we hold, notably the Internal League, our biggest competition that runs over a term.
  • Get involved with the club: play regularly, join us for our club nights, participate in our online discussions – these all show the commitment and enthusiasm we are looking for in our team members!
  • How can I be on the committee?

Online elections for the following season's committee are held towards the end of each Spring Term. The committee will send out more details when the time comes. To win an election, you will need to demonstrate your positive involvement in club activities throughout the year and, by submitting a manifesto, show all of the club's members why your addition to the committee will be beneficial to them and the club as a whole.

To get an idea of what the committee does to keep the club running smoothly, you can view their role descriptions.

The web site

What should I do if I can't access my web site account?

Email us and we can easily reset your password. Your user name will not be changed. The email you will be sent will contain all the information you need in order to reactivate your account.

Why was one of my comments moderated?

We only moderate user-submitted comments if they break the house rules. The rules are in place so that we can act upon submissions that might get the club into trouble with the Union. You might not have realised you were breaking them but we will nevertheless alter or remove comments where we find it necessary and we will advise you on how you can avoid this in the future.

There's a problem with something on the site!

Regular development to the site means that sometimes the odd thing doesn't work and we apologise if this affects your enjoyment of the site. Please contact us about the problem, explaining what you were trying to do and what browser and device you were using. We'll try to fix the problem as soon as possible.

I have a suggestion for a new feature for the site!

We would love to hear it and indeed any comments or feedback you may have. Please contact us and share your thoughts!

The game of snooker

What are the rules of snooker?

The full rules of the game can be found on the World Snooker web site.

Do we have to play the miss rule?

The miss rule was designed to prevent players from deliberately missing the next ball on. The recent application of the rule in the professional game forces players to successfully escape from a snooker or face the balls being replaced.

We don't expect our club players to be able to get out of every snooker so in our tournaments, we apply a version of the miss rule such that a miss will not be called if a player is snookered. Additionally, the match needs to be refereed or both players need to be of team standard, since the rule is played in this way at the national university BUCS Snooker Championships.

Note that deliberate misses will still be punished in all matches by a miss being called and a warning given to the striker. You can read the full text of the modified rule on our Tournament regulations page.
