FAQs

  1. What is the difference between the Fellwanderers, the Outdoor Club and the Mountaineering Soc.?

Fellwanderers only walk and scramble. We do not take part in activities that require climbing equipment. We are also the only club that attends the London beer festivals.

  2. Where do the Fellwanderers stay? Do I need a sleeping bag?

The Fellwanderers stay in camping barns and tents. You will need a good sleeping bag as most of our trips take place during the winter and spring terms. We do have some sleeping bags in stored that can be borrowed, but these are in limited supply.

  3. I have never walked up a hill before. Can I still join?

Anyone can join the Fellwanderers. During the trips we often split into faster and slower groups so that we can cater for everyone. In addition to weekend trips, we also do Sunday walks that are less trying and make a nice break from the city.

  4. I haven’t done much mountainous walking before, what kit do I need?

The only bit of essential kit that you have to have to come on trips is a pair of walking boots. These stop you slipping over and protect your ankles. Waterproofs are also highly recommended. You will need a bag to carry your lunch in and that’s it. Please see the Equipment page for more information.

  5. What is a fell?

    Noun (Scot. and North England.)
an upland pasture, moor, or thicket; a highland plateau.
