On Friday, the 3rd of February, the Fellwanderers group met up in front of the Union at around 5:00 PM as with all the previous trips. The number of people in attendance was surprisingly few, as we were all able to fit into one minibus. The drive up to North York Moors was cosy and the weather was quite nice, no precipitation. We stopped at a big Tesco, just as on the last Snowdonia trip, at around 8:30 PM, and bought food for dinner along with drinks, alcohol (wine and beer). Following an approximate 5-hour drive, listening to random music from a mixed CD, we arrived at the halls around 11:00 PM, many thanks to Heather’s excellent driving.

Snowdonia – Jan 2012
On Friday, at 6pm. We met up at the union, as usual, after a very nice sunny day. But the weatherforecast was not very good for the week-end away in Snowdonia, similar just as to the Lake District trip… There is a nice novelty during the journey, everyone got to choose the music each likes and added into the Ipod’s playlist. We stopped at a huge Tesco’s around 8.30 pm, in order to buy food and to eat it. We arrived in the Imperial College’s Mountain Hut after only 6 hours of travel, thanks to the impressive celerity of our amazing drivers Sarah and Joe.
Hadrian’s Wall – Winter Tour 2011-2012
Winter Walk 2011-2012: What do you get when you add 13 Fellwanderers to Hadrian’s Wall? A lot of penguin jokes (and that’s snow lie)
Abstract: Because sometimes even five sentences is too much to read The winter Fellwanderer’s trip for 2011-2012 was the national trail that follows Hadrian’s Wall, a distance of 84 miles. We camped out in village halls along the way and had several altruistic drivers who carted our gear between the halls while the rest of us hiked. It was an excellent trip that involved much Roman-related cultural enrichment, a survey of pubs across England, and a sampling of British weather (mainly of the wet variety). I had a lovely time and look forward to many Fellwanderer trips in the future.
Dartmoor
It was a warm winter evening when the Fellwanderers set off to Dartmoor with not a snowflake in sight. Bound for Belstone on the northern edge of the Dartmoor National Park we had a long way to go on a damp-ish Friday night but were soon stymied by an oil spill on the M4. After a small deviation around Reading we were an hour delayed and the hut’s optimistic estimate of a 4 hour drive went out of the window.
Yorkshire Dales
I have never seen the weather forecast change so rapidly. On Thursday of last week we were meant to have some rain on Saturday and then a clear day on Sunday. Even as we packed into the minibus on Friday evening for the drive to Yorkshire I still held hopes for a few spots of sunshine on the moors. By the time we were entering Yorkshire and I checked the weather forecast for the last time the verdict was clear with two days of winds up to 80mph and rain on Saturday. The reality shaped itself around this narrative very well.

Peak District
5.30pm on Friday evening. The first fellwanderers (obviously the most eager to leave London after a hard-working week) make their way to the union. Quickly all of us hikers are gathering together, exchanging excited comments on the trip which is awaiting us. Packing the two buses does not take a long time, and we are soon all comfortably seated inside a coach, ready to depart.

Fresher’s Walk Across The Seven Sisters
Early on Sunday morning, more than 70 sleepy freshers made their way to Victoria and began to congregate around the Fellwanderers banner which was proudly flying between two poles. Once everyone had purchased their tickets and handed them to Heather, our responsible adult, we made our way to the platform. The group’s size quickly became evident much to the dismay of the ticket collectors who promptly opened the gates and waved us through without much question.
