Swing dance, a group of American social dances originating from the inter-war eras, is characterised by energetic movements, dynamic footwork and explosive aerials. Danced to a wide range of jazz-related music including big band, blues, ragtime, rock & roll, gypsy and even modern jazz, pop and funk, its strengths lie in improvisation, spontaneity and, of course, having a great time!
After a period of relative silence for swing dance in the post-war decades, it has undergone a revival since the 1990s and this popular dance now can be seen in clubs and bars all over the world. In London, swing can be danced almost every single night, at multiple venues, to different music, both DJed and live bands.
On top of offering classes in lindy hop, balboa, blues and charleston, Imperial College Swing Dance seeks to build a strong social community of people passionate about swing dance and music, by holding weekly social dance sessions. We also aim to build up a good standard of technical dancing to enter and win competitions within and beyond UK. Collaborations between different dance and music groups in college will allow opportunities to dance to live music, innovate and evolve the dance.
Resident teacher Mark Tan has been trained in various forms of dance including salsa, tango, tap and jazz, but still favours the spontaneity of swing. He is known in London for his technique, musicality and creativity in social dancing.
So whether you want to be the best swing dancer in London, want to be able to dance and have fun, or just enjoy the music, come join us on Fridays for an evening of good music, great company and fantastic fun!
