If you find that you spend a lot of your life worrying about complex things such as money, work, relationships then the canoeing karma is for you.
It is a well known fact (ahem) that tanking down a load of whitewater between evil looking rocks will serve to take your mind of even the worst of life's worries leaving you feeling refreshed and relaxed afterwards if not cold and knackered.
Our trips come in several varieties: in the winter when there is plenty of water we travel to nearby weirs or rivers in distant corners of Britain. Weirs are ideal for one day trips and they provide a nice place to practice specific skills. Rivers, however, are where it's at; They and are much more fun, less instantly tiring and are the real reason for all the practice.
At the start of the year we run a few trips to low danger environments but by the end of the year those hardy types that stick with it graduate to challenging, low danger stuff. We encourage people to test themselves to their limits (the survival instinct becomes quite advanced in most members of the club), a typical quote from one member being "If you're not swimming you're not trying hard enough.".
In the summer there is much less to do and unless you go abroad or to one of the artificial courses you are restricted to surfing. Surfing in a kayak is a strange experience as most of the skill is in trying not to kill the people on surf boards. Surfing on the sea is similar to weir paddling as it lets you practice specific skills.
Despite being an assumed high risk sport all the trips we run, while exhilarating, are very safe. Honest. Nevertheless, you should take a look at our disclaimer and Safety Policy before embarking on any potentially life-threatening activities, e.g. coming to the bar with us.
