Safety Policy
From ICCC
The canoe club has an official Safety Policy, as submitted to the union.
The committee also has the following to say on the issue of safety:
The senior committee members (president, vice and treasurer) have a legal responsibility for the safety of members and equipment on club trips. We have volunteered to serve you, and would prefer not to have you taking the proverbial by pointlessly endangering yourselves or club property.
We have a duty of care to ensure that people and kit (in that order) are safely returned to the union at the end of a trip. We don't want to kill your fun, we'd just rather not end up in court.
If you disappear on a trip, that is our problem, because we are viewed as negligent. If you inform us of your intentions, at least we can tell you not to do it; if you decide proceed anyway, we can at least say that we advised against it.
If something serious were to happen to you, we are obliged to report it, and the Union would SHUT DOWN the club immediately.
In conclusion, if you want to do something which is outside the club's main activities on a trip:-
NEVER
- wander off by yourself: tell a senior committee member (president, vice or treasurer)
- where you are going
- what you are doing
- when you will be back
- take club kit without permission
It's just a bit of common sense and courtesy.
Lecture over.
