Fisher Hall is the cheapest hall within 20 minutes from school and should definitely be your first choice if you are on a budget or would like to spend your money on travel/food/shopping instead. A triple room costs only £57 a week while a typical single room (which may be slightly narrow though) costs about £95. If you are lucky, you may get a larger single room for slightly over £100 (my room can sleep 3-4 people on the floor!). The rooms do not come with a bathroom but with toilets and showers located between every floor, it should not be much of an inconvenience. The kitchen is shared between 5 to 6 people, which also mean your food is less likely to get stolen unlike the bigger kitchens in most other halls.
Amenities wise, the hall has a common room with a pool table, foosball table (we are probably the only hall where you need to pay 20pence to use the tables, but you can always pop by your friends’ place in other Evelyn Garden halls to play for free) and cable TV. There are also free hot drinks and snacks every night as well as DVDs for rental. The hall often has events such as Christmas dinner and cooking competitions which will be excellent opportunities for you to meet and interact with your hall mates. In addition, there is also a study room with free wi-fi which can be useful if your room mates are too noisy. The hall has 2 guest rooms with bunk bed and can be booked for just £20 a night if you have family and friends over. We also have our own laundry room with 4 washing machines and 4 dryers as well as irons and ironing boards provided.
The 20 minutes walk to school (if you are running late for school, it will probably take only 10 minutes) is not as daunting as it sounds, especially with the company of your friends from other Evelyn Garden halls and the nice cooling (or in the first few months, freezing) weather here. In fact, you can also stop by the supermarket, banks, post office, stationery shop, fast food restaurants and numerous eateries on your way to and fro school so it is really very convenient. There is a cinema just 5 minutes from the hall, which offers half price student tickets from Mondays to Thursdays (www.studentbeans.com), as well as Marks and Spencer just across the halls. For those who are interested in soccer, we are only a 10 minute walk away from Chelsea FC as well. Gloucester Road or South Kensington (the one next to school) tube stations are located 10 minutes away and there are direct buses to Chinatown, Oxford Street and Charing Cross Hospital (for the biomedics and medics). Furthermore, Evelyn Garden is a rich estate, which means that the area is relatively safe as well.
All in all, Fisher Hall may be old in comparison to other halls, with only basic amenities and no ensuite rooms. However, it is definitely decent for the price we are paying! Imagine all the travelling you can do with the money saved (or just putting it in the banks to earn the interest)!
