Technology in Medicine and Surgery Conference

Technology in Medicine and Surgery (TiMS) is a national and pan-disciplinary event. The TiMS ethos is to inspire the next generation of medical innovators and to expose them to the frontiers of medical technology and invention.

Aims and Ethos

Imperial College London itself has more than 2000 pairs of eyes in the form of medical students able to spot problems or improvements needed in hospitals, patient care and research environments. However, they might not have the engineering, computing, design, technological, business skills that are necessary to create a solution to that clinical problem. TiMS aims to foster a culture of always seeking to improve on the status quo by interdisciplinary collaborations, where students and professionals from various disciplines bring their skills and expertise to the table to solve a common problem.

The event is a one day conference for nearly 200 students of:

  • Lectures
  • Workshops
  • Dragons’ Den
  • Schools outreach
  • Poster competition
  • Innovations Exhibit

TiMS attracts students from all over Europe, having delegates from Bosnia, Slovenia and Austria, as well students from all over the UK

We hope to inspire students through a series of lectures and an innovation themed Dragon’s Den competition.  In 2011, we also opened our event to sixth form school pupils, who entered their innovation ideas into a new poster competition. TiMS had several exciting additions this year, the second life virtual hospital, the story of the inflatable operating theatre. Our key-note speaker, Mr Tal Golesworthy, an engineer with Marfan’s syndrome who, not only designed his own surgical implant but, was then the first patient to have it fitted!

Feedback

Feedback for this event is consistently high, scoring at least 4.5 out 5 for all aspects (catering, speakers, workshops and the dragons den).

By instilling a sense of wonder, we hope to motivate students into realising their vision for the future of medicine and surgery.
