Photoshop CS5

Photoshop CS5

I’m sure most of you will have heard of Adobe Photoshop, since it is the standard for all photo editing tools (we have a legal copy of CS3 in the darkroom), and I’m sure some of you will be aware that a new version of Photoshop has recently been announced: CS5.

The new version brings lots of very cool new features to the already jam packed Photoshop line, including greater HDR support, an improved camera raw, lens correction, refined edge selection and the jaw dropping content aware fill. If you haven’t already seen this video then its a must:

Speakers Corner

This weekend we will be taking our last proper trip out into London at least for this term. We will be taking a trip to Speakers Corner in Hyde Park, famous as a place that anyone can speak freely about any belief that they hold. So there will be lots of very interesting people trying to convince you of all manner of different things.

If you are interested then come and meet us in the Union on Sunday (21st) at 10am.

AGM

by

Thanks to everyone who has submitted manifestos for next years committee!!!

Our  AGM will take place on Wednesday the 21st at 1pm in the Union Dinning Hall. This is when everyone who has applied for a position has to present to the rest of the society why they are worthy of that position. Everyone then votes and hopefully we will have a new committee by the end of it! There will be snacks and drinks plus we will be taking a trip to the pub afterwards to celebrate!

Manifestos:

President/Chair:

James Dunn

Hi! My name is James Dunn, I’m currently in my second year of Aero and I would like to be your Photosoc president. I have been really involved in Photosoc this year and would love to continue in a more responsible role.

During my time in sixth form, while doing my photography A-level, I was involved with various exhibitions both in and out of school. This not only gave me a chance to expand my knowledge and skill in photography but also to get involved in a variety of organisational and managerial roles, something which I extended into the rest of my school life. Since joining Photosoc I have continued to further my understanding of photography as well as taking on a lot of responsibility with the organisation of the March exhibition. Working closely with members of the current committee on this project gave me and insight into the way that Photosoc works and some of the responsibilities I will assume if elected president.

One of my favourite things about Photosoc is the way it welcomes all photographers, whether your a hardened DSLR user, film fanatic or just want to learn how to get the best out of your compact. I want to make sure that no one feels like they can’t be as involved in Photosoc as I have been because they don’t have the latest camera of the most expensive lenses, I certainly don’t. I’m a firm believer that everyone can take amazing photos no matter what you use to take them.

If elected I will endeavor to answer any questions anyone has and if I cant answer it I’ll put you in contact with someone who can. Your years at Imperial will be some of the best of your life and I would love to be involved in making Photosoc the best it can be for everyone, not only to ensure that you have an amazing time but also to make sure you have some fantastic photos to remember it.

President/Chair:

Jonathan Chan

I am a photographer and I want people to love photography.

My name is Jonathan Chan and I will be running for the position of chair because I want to help make photosoc even better and continue to provide an environment that will allow people to enjoy photography and learn more about it. As a member of the sub-committee I have been helping the committee organize events and in my time learnt how it functions. I was also part of a group in my sixth form that organized photographic coverage for publications like the school newsletter, events such as the latest theatrical production or a sports match and other requests like archiving old books.

I fell in love with this hobby 7 years ago when I was 13 and have continuously been experimenting with various styles of photography from travel to studio and everything in between. I shoot in digital, medium format and 35mm film, resulting in many lonely dark hours developing and printing film, on top of the hours spent labouring away in front of a computer screen sorting and editing pictures.

While I am not the most experienced member, I am glad to listen and learn from others no matter their experience and try to help out by providing advice where possible. Whether it be questions like what first camera to get or how to cope with debilitating ‘GAS’, which while I have yet to find a cure for Gear Acquisition Syndrome I believe that photosoc can help.

Anyway I hope to see you in the AGM that will be held this Wednesday at 1pm in the union dining hall and in the meantime if you have any questions you can drop me an email at jonchan2003@gmail.com or ask me at the AGM.

Vice-President/Chair:

Lin Gan (Gordon)

Photosoc has given everyone a great platform to communicate and to improve our photography skills, to make friends and also act as a strong support for photographers in Imperial. It was a pleasure for me to be a member as well as a sub-committee member this year and I would like to contribute more and take up more responsibility by becoming the vice-president next year.

I have good knowledge in both digital and film photography and also a lot of experience in using the darkroom for developing and printing this year. I am also an active event photographer and have been employed for the Felix music night, winter dinner and fashion show etc. I am confident that I can assist the president and contribute to the society in every way.

Apart from the skills, I have been very active and involved in most of the photosoc events through out the year including twisted exhibition, photosoc exhibition and weekly trips. I am a friendly person and I got on well with most of the active members and offer to help other people quite often. I would like this to continue to do so next year and I believe I can offer even more by holding this position.

I am certain that I am able do a great job and making photosoc bigger and better, please support and vote for me.

Vice-President/Chair:

Kwasi Afrifa

Hello everyone, my name’s Kwasi and I’m a Second year Aeronautical Engineering student. I would like to be our Vice Chair for next year, as I think I have a lot to offer us in that role.

I took up photography after a back injury – I had originally been planning to do Architecture at university and so the free time that opened up because of the injury let me restart the more artistic activities I had had to give up previously. Photography is something I am keen on, and in many ways – from trying to understand the mechanics and electronics and theory that enable us to capture images to learning the techniques, visual language and aesthetics that we use to communicate ideas in our images.

I’ve put this enthusiasm to practice within PhotoSoc already, taking tutorial classes and contributing to and helping to organise both the joint exhibition with LeoSoc and our own recently opened annual exhibition. This is something I’d definitely like to continue, and something that I think is fantastic for showing our members’ talents to the wider university and beyond. I have also been on many of the photowalks over the past couple of terms and hope that I have been approachable on those!

If I am chosen as vice chair, I will do the things I’ve done before, and hopefully expand on them – sharing knowledge with others, helping people put ideas into practice – after all it is members who contribute who make the society as good as it is – and hopefully we’ll have even more fun next year than we did this.

Treasurer:

Yuen-Ting Creamy Lam

Hi, my name is Creamy Lam and I would like to run for a committee position as the treasurer. PhotoSoc is the first society I joined since coming to Imperial and it is proven that I have made the right choice.  I have really enjoyed the events and trips this year and certainly learnt a lot, not only about photography but also ways to get around London and hidden places that will keep your camera in your hands.

There are plenty of opportunities to learn and have fun at the same time during PhotoSoc events and I would like to encourage more people to take these opportunities. However as we all know, affordability is always one of the issues. Therefore one of my aims on becoming a treasurer is to reduce the cost of trips by arranging sponsorships and finding all possible ways to subsidise for events, so that we can encourage more photography-enthusiasts to participate.

As a Music Prefect during Sixth form, I was involved in arranging rehearsals and organising performances, which taught me the importance of being organised. This year I was given the opportunity to help organise trips and events for PhotoSoc as a sub-committee, which strengthened my organisational and team-working skills. I thoroughly enjoyed working closely with people who share the same interest because being in a group full of people who are committed and enthusiastic about the same passion is very motivating.

Social Secretary:

Margarita Kopniczky

I Would like to
- organize trips to fun places around London and maybe even 1 day trips out of London (weekend trip to some cool place to do nature photography and landscape?) and to exhibitions
- encourage everyone to organise trips/events and therefore to have a greater variety of things going on
- strengthen bond with Leosoc and organize joint events with them
- build relationship with other unis’ photosocs (ucl said they would like to have joint photowalks with us)
- more interactive general meetings (restructure them a bit?)
- keep everything that works so far (eg tutorial weeks, photoshop sessions, equipment etc) but add to it by encouraging wider range of styles and approaches to photography
- count on good teamwork with the whole committee
- and much more!!

Equipments Manager:

Bob (Shengda) Xu

This is my first year in Photographic Society. In the past two terms, I have been doing event photography, and I really enjoy this work. I have covered over 10 events, and I keep trying to let more people know the power of our society.  I learned much from being an event photographer. It enhanced not only my understanding of lenses but also the knowledge of efficient equipment management.

Thanks to the perfect equipment management of Ka Ho, making every great shot possible. For a student event photographer, I understand it is extremely important for the society to support members with great equipment. This is why I am running for this position; I would like to help members to have access to the top equipment in the college.

As Photographic Society Equipment Manager,

- I will give tutorials during tutorial weeks

- I will maintain all the equipment, making sure all of them are under excellent working condition

- I will keep equipment calendar all the time, making sure every piece is handed and returned

- I will do the research on equipment and I am willing to give reasonable advices when society needs to upgrade equipment

Thanks for reading and please vote for me!

Equipments Manager and Events Manager:

Ryan Yasin

Hey, I’m Ryan, I’m a first year aero student and I’d like to run for photosoc events-coordinator and equipment manager!

I feel confident with the idea of negotiating the best prices possible for our photographers and trying to get people of different experiences doing jobs; as well as scouting for work around the area, in estate agents for example. I think that coupled with the role of equipments manager will allow for a smooth link between getting the job and getting the equipment for the job if need be, as well as prioritising equipment withdrawal for events. I’m hoping to live nearby and should be available for kit loans most of the time. Photosoc has opened my eyes to film photography, digital flash photography and new lenses through the army of equipment available for its members; and I would love make sure everyone makes full use of what is available. I would implement a simple system for equipment withdrawal and make sure everything is logged and organised.

I have really enjoyed being part of the photosoc this year and will only continue to try to improve it as best I can.
