About the band

Imperial College Wind Band is a non-auditioned group of around 50 woodwind, brass and percussion players who study or work at Imperial College, London and play music for enjoyment and sociability. We get together every Tuesday evening in term time to rehearse a wide variety of music ranging from arrangements of classical favourites to musical and film medleys as well as modern wind band music. Throughout the year we give a number of public performances, both at Imperial and at other venues in and outside of London. Last year we gave a concert with the Band of the Coldstream Guards, went to Luxembourg on our first ever tour, played at the Imperial Varsity match and had a day trip to the village of Old in Northamptonshire, as well as having weekly rehearsals and several social events a term.

Our conductor

Gilly French has conducted Imperial Winds since 2004, since when she has seen it change from a slightly apologetic group to a formidable outfit with a fine reputation of its own. She started her musical life as a bassoonist but later moved first to singing and ultimately to conducting. She is artistic director of Bampton Classical Opera, a small professional company with a national reputation for its lesser-known 18th century repertory, and also conducts a chamber choir, Cantandum. Her repertory ranges from unaccompanied consort music through staged opera to modern band classics. Recent highlights include a concerts of Italian and German baroque music, stagings of Handel's The Choice of Hercules and Schubert's The Conspirators and, with Imperial Winds, concerts in Northamptonshire, Gloucestershire and Luxembourg. She also teaches chemistry at Westminster School and has recently taken up playing that most splendid of instruments, the tuba.
