Frequently asked questions:
- Who are ICSE?
- We are an enthusiastic group of string players, all students / staff of Imperial College London, who rehearse every Friday night (6.15pm - 8.30pm) during term time. We perform at least three concerts a year, plus trips and tours to other parts of the UK and Europe, sometimes opting to support chosen charities from our concert procedings.
- What is our playing standard?
- We play to a very high standard - many of our members have completed their Grade VIII and play in the other excellent ensembles and orchestras at Imperial as well as participating in other orchestras in London, such as ULSO, the London Mahler Orchestra and the Kensington Students Chamber Orchestra.
- What is our repertoire?
- We have a wide repertoire range - from Mozart to Stravinski, Elgar to Janacek, and anything else (within our budget) that contributes toward our goals of furthering the musical education of our members whilst providing varied and high quality concerts for our audiences. We are interested in exploring some of the more obscure works of the string orchestra repertoire as well as revisiting many of its core pieces, such as Tchaikovsky's Serenade for String etc.
- How is ICSE run?
- The day to day running of the ensemble is by an elected committee of extremely committed students who organise publicity, venue hire, music hire, balance the books, organise the various Weekend Away trips and summer tours, and (very importantly) the very active social side of ICSE! The committee and the conductor agree on the programmes for each term, and the conductor is encouraged to get involved with strategic decision making, offering help and advice and drawing on their own experience when necessary.
- What are we looking for in a conductor?
- We are looking for someone who can inspire and challenge us. A detailed knowledge of string playing is essential as our conductor should be in a position to help us with technical issues relating to the works, as well as of course the musical aspect. Our conductor will ideally take an interest in all aspects of the ensemble and provide advice and support to the committee on publicity, budget, etc. Rehearsals are usually friendly and relaxed, but always challenging and our conductor should aim to get the best results out of the ensemble while maintaining this supportive atmosphere. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, motivated and interested in listening to the players' points of view.
- When is the closing date for applications?
- Closing date for receipt of applications is midnight on the 21st May 2012.
- How do I apply?
- Please send your CV and a cover letter either by email (preferred) to icse@imperial.ac.uk, or to the address listed at the top of this page.
- How will the audition process work?
- From the initial applications a shortlist of candidates will be selected to audition with the ensemble.
- The initial selection will be made by the committee, the current conductor Scott Wilson and Richard Dickins, the Director of Music at Imperial College London.
- Shortlisted candidates will be notified by 31st May at the latest. Repertoire will be released at this point; shortlisted candidates must supply their own scores.
- Auditions will then take place during one of ICSE's usual rehearsal slots on the 1st June 2012.
- Each conductor will be asked to work with the orchestra for a period of time on a piece of selected repertoire.
- Additionally, each conductor will be interviewed by several committee members, the current conductor and Richard Dickins.
- Will 1st June be the only date for auditions?
- At present, this is the only date on which we intend to hold auditions. Please let us know if this may pose a problem for you.
