  Tall Ships

Over the past few years members of the club have crewed aboard the tall ships Stavros S. Niarchos and Prince William (owned and run by the Tall Ships Youth Trust). The Tall Ships Youth Trust is a charity that was set up in 1956 to aid the personal development of young people aged 16 to 25. 200ft in length with two 100ft high masts, these vessels require up to 55 members of crew. The ships venture all over the world, with annual trips to the Mediterranean and Caribbean. One of the years highlights however is the Tall Ships Race which attracts hundreds of similar vessels, all of which race between various European ports.

In order to join a voyage you have to be between 16 and 55 and be fairly fit (if you have physical difficulties then you may like to investigate the Jubilee Trust who run ships purposefully designed to enable a crew of mixed abilities to sail side by side on equal terms). Due to the ships being run by a charity, first time crew are expected to pay full price for their initial voyage, however they may be invited to return on subsequent voyages as volunteer crew (watch leaders, deck hands, cooks assistants) which requires only a minimal payment per night.

If you would like more information please follow the link: Tall Ship Adventures or email Sarah, who has sailed with the trust as a watch leader throughout the past 7 years.
