ICGAC Annual Dinner 2012

So all is confirmed with the Annual Dinner 2012! We shall be dining at the Marriott Hotel on Cromwell Road this Saturday 10th March, where a 3 course meal and as much booze as you can carry (it’s BYOB) should see the night away.

Here is the itinerary for the evening:

8pm: Champagne reception
8.30pm: Starter
9.15pm: Main course
10.10pm: Dessert
11.00pm: Move on to clubbing in London

There will of course also be several speeches and awards throughout the night!

ICGAC Annual Irish Poetry Night

Oscar Wilde once said that “Work is the curse of the drinking classes” and so to commemorate the poets of old Ireland and spread their good word the Imperial College GAC will be holding its third Night of Poetry and Story Telling, this Friday 27th January at 7pm!

All who went last year can tell you of ……the unadulterated culture and craic. We have decided to go with the same format of minimal Poetry and a bountiful of cheap alcohol. So whether your finished exams or just up for lying in the gutter while not staring at the stars then come along.

Unfortunately, due to the Union being wank this year, drinks will be at standard prices. But I’m sure you can all scratch around to find the required £2.20 per pint!

Invite anyone along who you’ll think will enjoy the comradery, confirm your attendance on the Facebook page and see you all there!!

ACC and Christmas Dinner

Firstly, a reminder that tonight is ACC. Just like last time, drinks are 4 for £7. Not the greatest deal but a deal nonetheless. I won’t be able to attend but get down there to represent ICGAA if you can.
The bigger event of this week is of course the Christmas dinner which will be held on Brick Lane at Monsoon (for a traditional curry), followed by a night on the town in Shoreditch. For only £10 a head and as much booze as you can carry, it is not a night to be missed. We will be meeting at the Union for 6pm (alternatively you can meet us there at 7pm). Try not to be late!
If you haven’t already, confirm your attendance on the Facebook group so that we can get a better idea of numbers.
Frank and Dunners will be running around London dressed as Santa handing out gifts and such if you fancy joining them beforehand.
See you all on Saturday!

Oxford Blitz Match Report

Imperial taking part in their second Blitz of the year ventured up to Oxford to play Cambridge, St Mary’s and home team Oxford. With teams of 11 aside, Imperial’s 11 were struggling for numbers – with a lack of possible substitties, but up for putting in a good performance against old rivals Oxford and Cambridge. Imperial arrived well ahead of throw in, enough time to enjoy a relaxed and lengthy warm up. After some delays throw in eventually went ahead with Imperial playing against Oxford first.

The first 12 minuite half went well for Imperial, driving the ball up the field repeatedly and getting some brilliant scores from the likes of Full Forward Timothy Dennehy as well as  some well kicked frees from Finzo. Oxford scoring a goal in the last few minutes of the first half lef Imperial 1 point up at half time. Half time score – Imperial 0-04 – Oxford 1-00. With a disappointing second half and a couple unfortunate goals Oxford came out on top. Full time Oxford 2-04 (10) - 0-04 (4) Imperial

With Cambridge up next Imperial reformed with a few changes to the team. Some crafty teamwork and a few scores with the help of new member John Cahill saw the teams level at half time. Unfortunately Cambridge slipped away into the lead scoring three goals in the second half leaving the final score at  Cambridge 3-03 (12) - 1-04 (7) Imperial

With the last match of the day an exhausted Imperial pulled their strength together to face league leaders and division one St Mary’s. With a solid performance put in by all, Imperial’s fitness got the better of them.  With a few unfortunate missed points a disheartened Imperial team made their way back to South Ken. Not without the regular occurrence of LB losing her phone. Final Score Imperial 0-03 (3) - 3-05 (14) St Marys.

Greenford Blitz Match Report

This weekend ICGAC Men’s football found themselves out in Greenford to potentially play Oxford, Cambridge and St Mary’s. Unfortunately Oxford and Cambridge pulled out at the last minute, leaving ten Imperial lads and a group of five unexpected players from Brighton to play the elusive Mary’s side.

With a promising start it seemed Imperial were competing with the experienced division one team. A few points from Imperial’s forwards and some solid defending from the likes of Frank O’Neill and PC saw the Imperial side competing.

The second half saw the St Mary’s fitness get the better of us. Although some solid goalkeeping by Kieran Leonard kept heads high while Imperial surged for some last minute scores.

With a disappointing result of Imperial will take away some real match experience. Concentrating on any weaknesses we have over the next few weeks at training will hopefully build confidence for the all important championships.

St Marys Blitz 26th November 2011

The last Blitz of the season , thankfully had the most successful turn out of the year, with Brighton, Oxford , St Marys and the club team Parnells making a show it was unfortunate that Imperial could not get a full team out to meet the challenge put before us. Through illness and injury, we were down to 5 players, the dedicated Imperial galls decided to go anyway to the suburbs of London to get a bit of fresh air at least.

Having stolen 2 players from the abundance of St Marys ladies we pulled ourselves together for the first game. As luck would have it we faced the teams in decreasing level of strength. We faced st Marys , who having beaten Imperial  42-0 at the first blitz were not expecting much of a challenge . Walking past the surplus of st Marys players and their coaches on the side-lines the Imperial players prepared themselves. The game had a very rapid pace, and yes Imperial ultimately lost however the marked improvement on the fitness and strength of the involved players reduced the st Marys win to St Marys 3-13 Imperial 0-2.

Knackered, we then faced Parnell a club team which was similar to that of the St Marys match with our own Holly Wilson making a strong impact on mid field.

By the last game the team were exhausted but determined more than ever now facing Oxford to develop the skills picked up during the 3 tough matches.  The teams being more evenly matched resulted in some excellent defence work by Holly Wilson, and Midfield sprinter Libby Richards. Caroline McCee worked well alongside Edel Byrne in the forward position to upset the Oxford defence and result in Edel Byrnes remarkable goal kicks some of which shall forever be remembered for all the wrong reasons!

Although we did not have a proper team , the girls who attended gave everything they had the women of the matches  were Holly, Edel, Caroline and Libby, the first two receiving there reward at the union later that evening.

That is the last blitz of the season so bring on champtionships!!!

Ladies Match Report 12/11/11

Oxford Blitz 12nd November 2011

This weekend the ladies Gaelic found themselves in the historic city of Oxford to play the third of the league Blitzes. After a shaky start the team eventually rolled into Oxford together ready to take on the competition in the form of Oxford and Brighton.

First up was Brighton, a team that scored well in the division last year and have a number of strong players. Putting this aside the Imperial girls put our recent training into practice, our new short passing tactics proved effective in training but on the pitch our fitness level was the main hindrance to an otherwise effective plan.

Having put up a good defence thus far, the ball eventually made it to woman of the match Ruth Kelly, an experienced player in both Gaelic and basketball, nimbly charged down the field missing narrowly at the final post.

The match ended Brighton 1-8 Imperial 0-0 , hugely better than last year however the Imperial team felt some sort of score line would have better reflected their performance.

Secondly Imperial faced Oxford, a smaller less experienced team, who had narrowly lost against Brighton. Imperial started in better form putting up a great defence initially from the Oxford forwards. However Oxford’s experienced players soon took control and once the first shot went in they just kept coming. Woman of the match deservingly goes to Aiobhin Flanagan who continued play even with a knock on the head setting up Ruth Kelly who scored the first point for the Imperial ladies this year!!!

The match ended Oxford 4-6 Imperial 0-1.

Well done to everyone who played. The matches were followed by a dark walk in the middle of nowhere to the top Irish pub in Oxford, it was not wooden panelling as we had imagined but the free cheese and pickle sandwiches and 7 o’clock darts tournament were more than suffice to entertain!!!
