With my first have-a-go under my belt a slight weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Thursdays have-a-go went very much to plan and there was a positive response from people that seniors and I spoke to. Everyone seemed to grasp the technique involved in shooting very quickly and I was very grateful for peoples patience in waiting for a turn on the bows and sharing around the equipment. Plus the number of arrow casualties so far has been relatively low. For those who came yesterday feel free to come again and if Archery is something you want to continue with this year please do join up. The link for membership is on the home page of the website. I think everyone is looking forward to our next free have-a-go session on Sunday from 8-10pm and our final session is on Tuesday 6-8pm. Again seniors will be availible to walk you over from Outside Beit from 7.30pm or you are free to make your own way over to Wilson House Sports Hall for 8pm. Afterwards we normally head over to the Monkey Puzzle pub for a quick pint and you are welcome to join us!

For all the up to date times and events do like our facebook page and check our website. If you want to join the mailing list and did not sign up at the freshers fair please email archery.club@imperial.ac.uk.

Happy Shooting!

Firstly hello to those who don’t know us and welcome to the Imperial College Archery Club for 2011/12, I am Jonathan the captain for this year. On this website you will find all the information that you need about the club, its events, times, dates and much, much more.

The first thing that you need to know is that the freshers’ fair is Tuesday 4th October and we are located just behind the main entrance to Imperial, in the Upper Dalby Court stand 5. Our senior members will be there from 11 – 4 to offer you all the information you need about the club and to enable you to sign up to our mailing list (highly recommended!).

Our first have-a-go session will be on Thursday 6th October running from 8pm – 10pm at Wilson House sports hall. If you need some help to find us a senior will be able to meet people outside of Beit Quad (the Union building) at 7.30 to walk people to the right place.

Can’t make Thursday? Don’t worry there are two more have-a-go sessions on Sunday 9th and Tuesday 11th, these are both free to come along and all the equipment and tuition is provided whatever your experience level! A little later on we will start our novice training so watch this space! (And check the calender!)

Secondly welcome back to all our senior members of the club. Please come along and support your club at the freshers’ fair, we need all the help we can get! Straight after the fair I will be heading over to Wilson House for our first senior only practice at the earlier time of 6 – 8pm this year! Following this I still need your support to help bring novices to Wilson and to assist in coaching as much as possible. I hope you will enjoy this year’s shooting more than ever and I hope to see you at the range soon.

Best Regards

Right a new post for a new year, well just about anyway. Sorry to everyone who’s been looking for an update for this page, it gets a little neglected over holidays. Still we have new and exciting news after the first few weeks of being back. First and foremost there are the results from the recent Guildford open. This competition takes the format of a FITA 25 round and as such usually gets a little overlooked by ICAC. However, this year we have managed to achieve a new club record at this competition.

In an inspiring feat of skill Tim Weenink (437), Mikhail Soloviev (417) and Jason Gu (400) shot a new Novice Team Record of 1254 and have not only secured themselves Half Blue Badges but also the rare and exclusive Record Breaker badge (once I can get round to making them that is).

Now on to rather older news. With the win secured 5th December against Essex and Sussex by the Senior (Rhys, Ian, Jordan, Calvin; 2205) and Novice (Richard, James, Tim; 1410) Teams we are in a very strong position to do well in SEAL (South East Archery League) this year. As such we need everyone to be training towards the next SEAL Match as well as BUCS (British University and Colleges Sports in Cardiff 5th March) in the next few months. These competitions offer the opportunity to not only have a LOT OF FUN!!!!! but also show the rest of the UK how amazing our skill is this year (especially the Novices). So EVERYONE who can make it to the BUCS indoor champs should sign up with Edmund or another member of the committee as soon as possible, to guarantee you can represent us at this amazingly fun competition.

This brings me on to competitions. While the immediate concerns are competitions such as SEAL, BUTC and BUCS (both very soon btw), we also have the online E-League to shine in as well as our Ladder League. In the last two sessions (October-November) of the E-League the Senior Team has maintained 7th position in Division 1 while the first novice team achieved 2nd place in their first month of entry to Division 3, loosing out only to Edinburgh. These results are ridiculously encouraging, so I for one would like to ask everyone that can to shoot and score a Portsmouth round before the end of January to increase our chances in the December-January Session of the E-League.

Thats about all I have to say for now so I’d just like to leave you with the hope that you all have a good term and get back into training as soon as possible.

So the novice training was quite successfully rounded off by the Halloween fun shoot last night! I hope everyone had fun shooting at random “scary” things and enjoyed the free food in the pub afterwards, even though we only asked for chips we got a great spread and are very grateful to the Monkey Puzzle for their continued support!

So a quick round up of the last three weeks: we started with fresher’s fair where we got a great number signing up for the mailing list (265, a record!) and this was reflected in the turn out to the have-a-go sessions. Almost too many people to cope with, but it was great to see so many people interested. We then taught the basics for three weeks by moving through all parts of the shot and trying to help everyone make a consistent shot.

And this is where we are now. Looking forward into the rest of this term we have a few competitions and SEAL matches to get everyone used to shooting in a competition, and will soon be starting the novice ladder league for those who want to take part. I would recommend that everyone does as it is a great social activity as well as being useful in improving your skills under pressure!

We awarded many badges to members for 3 in the red, or 3 in the gold:

3 in the red: Jason, Richard, Gowntham, Michal

3 in the gold: Florian, Richard, Michael, Tim

So well done to everyone there. For those who haven’t yet got a badge, keep going!

The results of the senior league for October are also out:

ICAC Emperor – Nish

ICAC Lord Vader – Rhys

Insurrectionist – Henry

Knave – Jonathon

You can keep up to date with all the league action on the league page.

From now on we will be shooting from the furthest blue line in the sports hall, which is actually the correct indoor competition distance for us. This means that the seniors are allowed to shoot during all sessions, however there will be two or three seniors at each session not shooting to help everyone out. As ever if you have any questions or would like some help then feel free to ask anyone.

Well that is the first week of term done! I hope everyone has settled into the university life and has enjoyed all the things that they have done so far.

A week ago there was the Fresher’s Fair where everyone that signed up to the mailing list contributed to the most names we have ever had sign up! This was a fantastic result which also led to myself owing everyone a pint (as was the deal if we gained more than 250 names).

The have-a-go sessions reflected this record breaking result from the Fresher’s Fair, making them hard but rewarding work for all involved. It was great to see so many people interested in trying out archery, and we hope that you had a good go as well.

Now it is time, if you have decided you would like to join archery, to sign up to be a member. The cost is £39, which covers absolutely everything you need to shoot with the club. There are no session fees, no equipment costs, nothing. To sign up, go to the Union website. If you cannot pay by credit/debit card then send me an email and we’ll see what can be done.

From now on we start to train all the novices with a 3 week training course. If you weren’t able to make it to any of the have-a-go sessions and would like to give archery a go then please do come along to any of the sessions this week. Do always refer to the calendar on this site for the latest correct information on session times.

If you are an experienced archer, you can come to the senior training sessions on Sunday 6pm-8pm. This will only be for the first 3 weeks until the training course has finished, after which seniors will be able to shoot at all sessions.

See you all at the range soon!
