Welcome back everyone from a relaxing summer, I hope everyone also had a good time!
The new academic year is quickly approaching, so I thought I’d give you some heads-up to what will happen during the next few weeks.
First up is the wonderful Fresher’s Fair, which will take place on Tuesday the 6th of October from 11am to 4pm. If you are new here and want to know more about archery, our club or the student life at Imperial in general, that’s the place to be! Our stand is on the Queen’s Lawn, near the library.
The Have-A-Go session will follow on Wednesday (7th of October) from 1pm to 4pm. We’ll also walk people over from Beit Quad at 12:45. [Update: Because it'll rain on Wednesday, we'll have the Have-A-Go on Thursday evening in Wilson House instead. See events on the right!]
It’s a nice event to try out shooting and see if archery is something for you. The following Sunday (11 Oct), we’ll repeat that indoors in Wilson House. We’ll start at 6.30pm and end around 10pm. Again, we have some of our club members to walk you over from Beit Quad at 6pm.
Our session times during the winter and spring term are as follows:
- Tuesdays from 8pm – 10pm
- Thursdays from 8pm – 10pm
- Sundays from 6pm – 10pm
This will be interrupted by the christmas break and most likely also the light opera play (for about a week during December). More info on that in due course and also on the calendar. Apropos website, it has now been updated with all the session times and info how to join.
The first session will be on Tuesday the 6th of October right after the Freshers Fair. It will be for seniors only, and we might use it to finish up the equipment and get used to shooting indoors again. I think we’ll head there after the Fresher’s Fair, and have a pit-stop at a pub for some food and non-alcoholic drinks.
After the first week, for the next few weeks, all sessions will be dedicated for novice training from 8pm to 10pm. Sundays from 6pm to 8pm will be senior only training, followed by another novice session. Once we’ve got manageable novice numbers, we’ll be able to relax this and let the seniors shoot more often.
To give the seniors some excitement, the 2nd Stag Hill Indoor Tournament will be held in Surrey on 31st October. This is a FITA18 round with teams of three. It should be a great start to us, since this is a somewhat relaxed shoot as a non-record status. Let Edmund know if you are interested in taking part, and if there’s sufficient interest in the shoot, he’ll enter the club to it.
As a quick reminder, here are this years’ committee positions:
Robin Baumgarten – Captain
Ian Connelly – Treasurer
Edmund Lam – Secretary
Jordan Muscatello – Vice-Captain
Nishnath Sundar – Equipments Officer
Rhys Coombs – Records Officer
Stephen Wood – Webmaster
This year, you should use the union website exclusively to join the club (no more paper slips!). The link is right here. If you’re new, feel free to attend first couple of sessions before deciding to join us. And if you’re old, well join the club right away, and get some practice back in those rusty back muscles!
Also, a big thank you to Nishanth, Jordan and Rhys for repairing all the 150ish club arrows, making 10 new strings for the bows and keeping the rest of the equipment functional! We’ve also ordered new targets, new sights and hundreds of small bits and bobs to please next year’s load of novices (and seniors, but they’re addicted anyway)!
I hope you’ll enjoy the new year of Uni and relax at the archery sessions afterwards with us!
Robin
The Captain

El capitan!
